Editorial Policy

Koedoe (ISSN 0075-6458), the research journal for national parks in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) is published biannually (as from 1989) by the South African National Parks (SANParks). It includes contributions on empirical or theoretical investigations, which are applicable to national parks and equivalent protected areas, in the RSA and abroad. The journal is listed in the Information Survey Manual (Research Output of Universities as prescribed in the National Education Policy of the National Department of Education of the RSA (NATED 02-014, 88/07 and subsequent editions).

A contribution should reflect a scientific investigation of the subject concerned. Full-length papers, short communications (500-800 words) and relevant checklists on original research, as well as succinct review articles and book reviews, on aspects of zoology, botany, microbiology, geology, archaeology, sociology and history, marine biology and veterinary science with relevance and application to nature conservation or conservation biology, will be considered for publication.

Contributions are accepted on condition that they are offered solely to Koedoe. Submission of an article therefore implies that the material is original and that it is not under simultaneous consideration for publication elsewhere. Acceptance of papers for this journal is in the hands of the editorial board, which advises the editor on the selection of referees and adjudicates in the case of conflicting reports. The Editors’ decision is considered final. The editor assumes that all authors of a multi-authored paper agree to its submission.

In addition, authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that it is it accepted for publication; exclusive copyright is the accepted paper is assigned to SANParks and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. In consideration for the assignment of copyright, SANParks will provide the corresponding author with a PDF reprint of the article. SANParks will not put any limitation on the personal freedom of the author to use material contained in the paper, in other works that may be published. It is the authors’ responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables and the like, from other publications.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communication has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editors’ discretion. Personal communications should not appear in the list of references.

The publisher reserves the right to charge to authors the cost of changes made to the text or figures at the proof stage when such changes are extensive. No charge will be made for corrections of errors made during the editorial process or by the printer.

Contents of each contribution are attributable to the author, and are not necessarily subscribed to by the Editor or SANParks.

Contributions should be written in a concise style, in English.

Papers reporting on work with animals used for experimental purposed must include a reference to the code of practice adopted for the reported experimentation. The Editor takes account of animal welfare issues and reserves the right not to publish.

In order to reduce the volume of correspondence the Editor reserves the right to make minor linguistic alterations, without consulting authors every time he does so. Acceptance for publication will be decided following editorial review and all contributions are sent to at least three referees for evaluation. All refereeing is strictly confidential, unless the referee agrees to the release of his/her identity through the editor, who uses his discretion. Authors are requested to suggest the names of three potential referees.
