The cricket oval near Skukuza is a hidden gem, carefully maintained in amidst the Kruger bushveld. The players? An assorted bunch of Scientists, Rangers, Field Guides and community members from Skukuza, the Northern Region and the SANParks online forum, who will be playing cricket to raise funds for SANParks!
Junior Honorary Rangers Training in Skukuza

Local young conservationists got the chance to go “behind the scenes” in Skukuza, Kruger National Park, as part of their training as Junior Honorary Rangers (JHR). The group of 12-18 year old learners from Malelane, Nelspruit and White River spent a weekend learning more about how science and monitoring go a long way in helping our understanding of how the environment functions.

Alaskan Adventure for Kruger Scientist

“The Alaskan wilderness is nothing like our wilderness here in Kruger” says Judith Kruger from Scientific Services, Skukuza, Kruger National Park. “There are thousands of green alpine trees and large flowing rivers with huge amounts of floating ice, even in Summer”. This is a far cry of the heat and yellow-brown hues of Kruger at the end of Winter. Judith, who is responsible for science support and data management in Kruger, recently took the long trip to Alaska to join a group of specialist software engineers and programme developers from NCEAS (National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis).

Is there a hyaena hotel in Skukuza? This may seem like a strange question but researchers from the Mammal Research Institute (MRI) at the University of Pretoria is looking into how close contact with humans is affecting the behaviour of spotted hyaenas.

"Team Wild" a "Wild" Success

The first episodes of “Team Wild”, a 26 part programme aired weekly on YOTV, has had a fantastic reception. At a recent screening in Skukuza, it had adults and children alike laughing and learning about the unique experience of growing up in the Kruger National Park, and in the process, exploring issues pertaining to biodiversity and conservation in a fun and informative way. YoTV is Wild About Skukuza

Team Wild is coming to town! The Southern African Natural History Unit (SANHU) has been approached by SABC 2 to produce 26 short inserts for a YoTV programme called “Team Wild”. The series will be presented by two local children from Skukuza Primary School. The inserts will be part reality, part documentary, aimed at 6 to 9 year old viewers.

While the cricket weekend was an opportunity for inter-park co-operation, community outreach, as well as a platform to bring our online community together, there was also a fund raising objective. Prominent Plant Conservationsit Visits Skukuza

Based in Durban, KZN, Geoff is an expert consultant on various plant related topics ranging from vegetation assessment to site rehabilitation, with an indigenous nursery in Westville, KZN called Fig Tree Indigenous Nursery.
