The SANParks’ Northern Region (Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site and Golden Gate Highlands National Park) has heeded the call to action and will be joinining the world at large in celebrating 67 minutes of Mandela day. Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity, and on this day (his birthday) every global citizen is asked to selflessly donate 67 minutes of their time to those less fortunate.
On 13 September 1963, Golden Gate Highlands National Park (GGHNP) was officially proclaimed by the government as a national park and 2013 marks 50 years since that proclamation.
The South African National Park’s (SANParks) Northern Cluster parks, consisting of three national parks (Mapungubwe National Park & World Heritage Site, Marakele National Park and Golden Gate Highlands National Park), Achievement Awards took place on Thursday, 27 June 2013 at the Golden Gate Hotel in the Free State. This is one of the initiatives driven by the annual Kudu Awards in an attempt to award excellence throughout SANParks.
Golden Gate Highlands National Park, managed by South African National Parks is covered in a blanket of snow and it is continuing to fall. According to Gerrit Potgieter, Hotel Manager: Golden Gate and Chalets, “this is the heaviest snowfall we have seen since 2006. The snow is continuing to fall and is really thick.”
