Cape Agulhas Lighthouse proudly restored and open to visitors

Date: 2013-12-10

After more than 150 year’s duty and excessive weathering at the southern tip of Africa, the lighthouse required urgent restoration.  Built in 1848 this is the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.   Preparations and planning for the restoration started as far back as October 2012.  The restoration was done by Transnet  Freight Rail RME  under guidance and supervision of Heritage architect John Rennie of RennieSchurrAdendorff.  The Lighthouse was also extensively restored in 1983.

The lighthouse is open from 09:00 to 11:30 / 12:00 to 17:00.  The last tower climb of the day is at 16:30.  Tariffs are R22.00 per adult  and R11.00 per child under 12 years.
