KZN HRs host JR Facilitator prize-giving ceremony

Date: 2009-12-21

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Honorary Rangers (HR) held their Junior Ranger (JR) Facilitator prize-giving and braai at the Karridene Protea Hotel on KZN’s south coast last week.

A total of 19 Junior Ranger Facilitators met the requirements and have qualified. It has been a year of trials and tribulations in understanding and getting used to new materials at a time when the academic year makes great demands on educators and learners.

Bob Abel, the Regional Facilitator handed out the Facilitators’ certificates and Mr Rodgers Ngcobo, the Regional Vice-Chairman, handed out wonderful wildlife book prizes donated by Struik-Random House Publishers. Ms Aline Gumede was cited as having qualified 90% of her learners, assisted by Ms Zamambo Mkhize - a great achievement. She has also won a trip to Umfolozi.

The culmination of the prize-giving event was the announcement of the Facilitator of the Year. This envied prize was awarded to Ms Thembeka Sibisi of Ogwini Comtech by Mr Richard Horlock, Assistant Manager of the hotel. Sibisi has been a Facilitator since 2007 and last year qualified a group of 20 learners. This year she qualified 75% of her JRs and served efficiently as the school’s JR Coordinator. She is also a fully qualified Honorary Ranger and is taking extra conservation courses offered by the Ethekwini Municipality for Educators. Her Junior’s perform very well and are enthusiastic and well-informed.

Sibisi won a two nights’ bed and breakfast for four people in luxury accommodation at the Karridene Protea Hotel. In addition, the Amanzimtoti Spur donated meal vouchers for R250 and the KFC nearest to the hotel donated a meal for four people to be used by the winner of this prize. After Mrs Thoko Ndlovu delivered the vote of thanks, the fun times then followed!

Without the generous sponsorship of the venue and much of the food by the Karridene Protea Hotel, and the additional sponsorship by the Honorary Rangers, this event would not have been possible. The KZN Honorary Rangers thank them for their generosity and community-mindedness.
