Honorary Rangers
Request Duties
Driving Duties
The duties entailed the driving of vehicles to and from Northern Kruger and other support for Leadership for Conservation in Africa Conference.
One example of Honorary Rangers responding to an ad-hoc call for help from SANParks was at the end of August 2006 when the Leadership for Conservation in Africa (LCA) Conference was held at Pafuri. Avis (SANParks’ car hire company of choice) was unable to supply drivers to get the vehicles from Gauteng to Pafuri and back (a distance of some 600km). Nine drivers were needed to drive the 10 seater Evico mini-buses.
An email to the HR members in the 4 main Gauteng regions saw 21 HRs make themselves available for the 9 places. Six vehicles left from Pretoria driven by Leon Fourie, Willie Hendrikz, Paul Maluleke, Gerhard Strydom (all Pretoria HRs), Willem Van Rensburg (West Rand) and Karl Stahl (Johannesburg), while 3 left from Isanda and were driven by Mauro Marchioro, Tony Proudfoot and Dave Nel (all from East Rand HRs).
All of the drivers spent the night at a makeshift campsite at Pafuri Picnic Site, and most returned to Gauteng on the empty plane that flew in the international delegates. They then returned on the plane 2 days later to drive the vehicles back to their original departure depots. They were treated to a bonus night at Pafuri Wilderness Camp, before driving back the following day. Dr Karl Stahl was an exception, as he joined fellow HR for the duration of the event as a translator for the French and German speaking delegates.
The Honorary Rangers were further involved in the initiative through the participation of ex-NEC Chairman Ernie Blom, who was part of the organising committee and used his extensive business contacts to help identify and attract important delegates to the event.
