Junior Rangers and facilitators visit WESSA in Howick
JRs and facilitators who visited
WESSA
Three facilitators and 41 young people of the Junior Ranger Group at Qhilika High School, Umlazi, Durban visited the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Conservation Education Centre at Umgeni Valley in Howick during 6 to 8 April. These rangers and facilitators enjoyed three days filled with much fun and educational opportunities.
Despite keen competition amongst all our schools, the facilitators of Qhilika earned this by being the first school to meet their registration deadlines. They are the new kids on the block as the other schools have been with us since 2006, and it is great to see their teamwork, enthusiasm and attention to detail.
Even the principal, Mr Nkosi, got in on the act and asked whether he could accompany the group to learn more about conservation. With such support, they can only do well in the future as they become part of a national team working to make a difference to the environment. It is most heartening to know how much young people care the world they live in.
Many thanks go to WESSA and their staff for making this opportunity possible by leading the educational experiences, and by sponsoring the accommodation and food as well as to the SANParks KZN Honorary Rangers for sponsoring the bus. Both the juniors and their facilitators say they learnt a great deal and had lots of fun.
