The Glen Shopping Centre: SANParks Honorary Rangers Exhibition

21 to 27 March 2005

The next Honorary Ranger exhibition will take place at the Glen Shopping Centre, Johannesburg from 21st to 27th March. To get to the Glen Shopping Centre take Comaro Street/Oak Street of ramp from the Johannesburg Southern Freeway. Turn first left into Boundary Road which will take you directly into the Centre.

The SANParks Honorary Rangers have periodically exhibited and collected donations at shopping centres to draw people’s attention to the atrocities and threat of poaching within National Parks and to explain to them the resources and equipment needed to counter this genuine threat to the parks. This concept has been expanded on to include exposing the public to the threat to the parks of exotic plant and animal species (which is regarded as the single biggest threat to indigenous fauna and flora) and conveying the intricacies involved in veterinary services and game capture.

Graphic photographs, actual traps and snares, animal skulls and information booklets are on display as well as Honorary Rangers eager to convey their knowledge to members of the public. The Honorary Rangers also use this opportunity to promote SANParks and to expose the public to other actions and projects they may be involved in, which may spark an interest with people to join their ranks.

This concept of shopping centre exhibitions has evolved further to include educational visits to schools and a dedicated team of HRs from both the Johannesburg and West Rand regions have started a schedule of school visits which they hope will become a regular calendar feature for schools in Gauteng. If the project is a successful one, it will then be mirrored by regions in other parts of the country.
