Hi!!
We set off at daybreak this morning and got to the Rooivalle viewpoint about half an hour later. We saw two Black Eagles flying down the kranz!!! I could not believe my luck! What amazing birds and so beautiful and to be able to watch them from above and see the white 'cross' on the tops of their bodies - a real WOW! moment! Went back a couple of hours later to see if we could see them again but with no luck.
Also have seen Mountain Zebra, Mountain Reed buck, Klipspringer, Springbok and Baboons today.
Hi DB,
Great to hear that you saw the black eagles. We saw them as well last september, also at the Rooivalle viewpoint, so we know what a beautiful sight it is. The black eagles had their nest below the viewpoint, on your right, and above them was a booted eagle's nest.
I don't know how long you will be staying at the Karoo NP and if you read this in time, but if you have the opportunity, take the 4x4 drive via Pienaarspas (i believe that's the name). You can do it either by own 4x4 vehicle or on a guided tour. It's a road you will not easily forget with astonishing views on the area around the restcamp. We did the guided tour. Our guide and driver was Joshua, an excellent guide!!
And don't forget to have a look at the birdhide.
Enjoy the rest of your stay!
