I was playing with Google Earth just now and noticed that large parts of the KNP are now available in reasonably high quality satellite pictures. It looks like the pictures were made late last year as the Limpopo and Luvuvhu are dry.

It's lots of fun to see the park in detail from a birds perspective :D

Thanks Madach
Great, must have a look as Kruger was not really very clear at all before.

For all Google Earth fans, they have upgraded parts of the park on their site, Twee Riverien is now in high res and can be seen very well

Regards

Steve

Fairly recently Google Earth improved many of their satellite images so these images were able to be seen in greater resolution. For example you can now zoom into your house if you live in my suburb Bedfordview and get a very acceptable aerial view of the imediate area around your house (great for checking neighbourhoods).
Coming back to the Kruger, Google Earth makes it possible to take some close up aerial views of many areas.
To give you a taste for some possibilities I've created a couple of examples: Olifants Gorge area, Crooks Corner and a tributary entering the Letaba alongside the S47.
Fly to Crooks Corner
Sadly not all resolutions are the greatest yet (but this will improve) and despite this you can still spend hours "touring the Kruger" from the air. If you have a dial up modem don't bother but if you have ADSL access go and play with Google Earth ... . You'll love it
If you give it a go then paste these co-ordinates into the "Go To" box in Google Earth and see if you recognize this point ...

On our recent trip we watched 2 lionesses walk for about 3 kms from this spot and there was also a Rhino in some bush straight ahead.

Google earth is amazing and a whole lot of fun, the only problem is the images are aprox 1 year or more older. I checked out my house in Edenvale and across the road is a huge big Blue Gum tree on the image. The council cut this tree down last year some time.

Snoobab ... you're quite right. Up to a few weeks ago the images of the area you and I live in were 3 years old and areas now in high definition were only in very low definition.
I can't wait for all the country to have the resolution like New York does on GE or even Cape Town for that matter

I wish I could run GE at work....

But Crooks Corner I recognize very well! I stood there not even a month ago...

Mmmmmmm

I was looking at BnD earlier - much better resolution than before; still can't see any Rhino, though :(

The Rhino is behind the 3rd Knobthorn on the right.

Had a look at LS camp, really cool. Almost able to pin point which camp site is the best one and ear mark it for my Sept trip.
Will be entering at Malelane so will check out the third knobthorn on the right for the rhino as I go past BnD.

Gareth, my son, took the GPS with him recently on the 05.30 morning walk (what a time to start in winter ...) at Satara. Marius and Chester were the rangers in charge. I've plotted the track using the info from my GPS and also correlated this with a Google Earth image so you can get a pretty good idea of the area walked. In total they walked some 6kms and covered 3km sections south and north of the N'wanetsi River south west of Satara camp.
You can see the maps and a short "visit" report here Morning Walk on the Wild Side
What I found fascinating was the Hamerkop nest they saw.
