Great sighting WTM. I have only seen them in Kruger twice. Once on the s3 a few years ago and last year in Punda camp. They were not that common but maybe they are becoming more abundant. Anyone else seen them.

We have also only found them at Punda (on the Flycatcher Trail).

Ja, we saw them near Pafuri PS during the Birding weekend in Jan.

I've seen these in Skukuza, Biyamiti Camp, Near Lower Sabie....Aswel as along the Crocodile River(S25)....and In Marloth Park...and in Lake Kariba..Not the most common bird, but not as uncommon as I thought.

Hi Anne-Marie,

Second bird is a Retz's Helmet-shrike - eye and bill colour and white undertail coverts.

Great birds to see, both would be lifers for me, I'm very jealous!

Have a good weekend,

Barcud

Hi Shliek,

Bush Fairy is correct with the second one - Ret's Helmet Shrike.

It helps a lot if you could add information on where you saw each bird and the dates seen if possible.

Hope this helps,

This 1st year immature (if I've got the aging right) was part of an extended family we found near the Pafuri border post. There were a few adult birds present and another immature which I believe to be in its 2nd year (showing the red skin around the eyes). The yellow eye of the adult will only appear during the bird's 3rd year.
