sable's Bontebok for Beginners. Bontebok NP, Dec. '13

Unread postby sable » Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:05 pm

This year our holidays started at the end of November,
the first time that we stayed in South Africa during the Advent season.
Coming from rainy November in Germany we enjoyed the South African early summer very well.

This time I added a new National Park to my list,
it was a first time day visit at Bontebok National Park.

Bontebok for Beginners

Unread postby sable » Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:07 pm

We arrive at Bontebok National Park about noon.

These are our first bonteboks not far away from the gate.
It seems they are having siesta, only the youngsters are moving.

Soon we arrive at the reception to get our permit, something to drink and some sweets.

We are welcomed by the resident tortoise

and decide to take the route to the picnic area.

Thank you vinkie, Pumbaa, MM, onewithnature and Stampajane.

It was definitely a good start for our SAN Parks visits.
SO preferred a visit to Cape Agulhas, but as the road between Hermanus and
Standford was washed away due to heavy rain falls in the mid of November
we changed our plans to a first time visit to Bontebok National Park. :D

At the picnic area there is a map of the hiking trails.

Image

Due to a lot of little black flies we decide to take the walk at our next time visit.
We know these little black flies already from Augrabies, they always try to get into your eyes,
nose and ears.

On our way at the tourist loop we see these very shy bonteboks which disappear into the green bush
as they discovered there is someone watching them.

We enjoy the view to the Langeberg Mountains.

Image

Far away we see many bonteboks having siesta

Image

... and a good camouflaged rhebok taking the time for browsing.

Image

It seems there had been zebras as well.

On our way back to the park's gate there is this big bird,
I never saw such a bird before.

Image

It is as big as a Kori Bustard, but the head looks different.
Maybe it is a Ludwig's Bustard.

When we are back at the bonteboks close to the gate, we discover that there is still siesta time.

Image

Only the youngsters have moved. Some of them already lay down.
This one is close to the road.

Image

For us it is time to say good-bye.
Good-bye until next time!
