Roadworks between Nelspruit and Malelane

Unread postby ecojunkie » Tue Oct 08, 2013 6:25 pm

Please note that the roadworks in the Crocodile Gorge can add up to an hour to your journey if you are unlucky. This obviously depends on time of day, amount of traffic, and whether you just miss a turn or not! The other morning I was not delayed much at all as I did not actually have to stop at either of the stop and go points...... There are currently 2 stop and go points.

These roadworks are predicted to last about a year.

At present there is one near the Mara turn-off, and another in the middle of the Gorge.

The detour via Carolina etc will miss the roadworks and one toll, but I do not know the route and have not used it.....maybe someone else can post information on that.

We will be coming from Barberton, and joining the N4 a few kms before the Toll plaza.

The alternative route I often use is the one via Baberton. It is not much longer than the N4, though because of winding roads it does take a bit longer to drive.

With the roadworks it will however now be the faster option.

Take N4.
Turn in to Machadodorp.
In town take the route to Badplaas.
Many kilometres later ... you reach a T-junction.
Turn left to Baberton (Right is Badplaas).
Follow this road for many kilometres heading over the Nel's Hoogte pass.
At the next T-junction turn right towards Baberton (Left is Nelspruit).
Drive past the entry to Baberton town and past Barberton's dump site.
At the back of town you will reach a four way stop.
Turn left towards Kaapmuiden.
Follow this road and be careful to turn right and cross the train spoor at the "Diggers retreat" pub towards Kaapmuiden.
Drive past Low's Creek.
At Kaapmuiden you will reach a T-junction with the N4 just before the Kaapmuiden toll gate.

This is a scenic route which gives you access to Malelane, Komatipoort and Crocodile bridge.

It is a major upgrade on the road so even if they are not working the stop/go points are operational.

I think it depends on whether you hit it as it turns go or stop! And being long distances it takes a while for the traffic to clear too. I have caught both as they turned go and had scarcely any hold-up, but also had a 2 hour journey.......

Travelled that way yesterday. In the morning (leaving Malelane about 5.30am) the trip took approx double normal time, and the same in the evening (leaving Nelspruit shortly after 4pm). It felt worse in the evening because there was much more traffic. I caught the first roadworks as the light changed, but sat a long time at the second, and there was a 3km queue of cars waiting on the other side.

Will go that way again tomorrow and Friday :(

Last Friday we took Boulders Road and it certainly saved at least a 30 minute wait. It is only 6kms longer than going direct on the N4 but you do miss the stop/go

But be warned it is very narrow and twisty and you still land up coming out in the middle of the east roadworks. I will not use it because I feel that one taxi trying to use it as a rat run might well be one taxi too many for me.......and I have even seen trucks try to use it.

I used both roads recently. I would rather stick to the N4 (you only loses about 20 mins). The road between Whitriver and the gate is narrow and congested with slow driving taxis and local traffic. Also lots of animals and people on that road. Not a safe road in my opinion. Drive safely!

We were obviously lucky when we used the Boulders road as only saw one other car. Guess it depends on the time of day - we did it at 14h00 on a Thursday

My SO does that route at least 4 times per week. This morning he had a 55 minute delay going from Karino to Malelane Gate but on the return with clients, who had a plane to catch, took the Boulders road which took him just over an hour from Malelane gate to KMIA.
Hopefully TRAC directive we received, is correct that the stop/go's will not be in operation from this Friday at close of business. Only time will tell I guess

Are there still stop and go board between Nelspruit and Malelane and are they operational on a Saturday? Will be driving from JNB airport to Pretoriuskop and have decided it will be best to use Malelane gate and pick up some shopping at the Spar enroute, time dependant. If anyone has travelled this route recently and update would be appreciated. Thanks Sandy
