This will be the first time that we will be writing a Trip Report, this will be a trip report written by Vinkie and Apex Predator.

We are still planning the TR of our 2011 trip... But we will start with the July 2013

On the 4th of July we drove from the Netherlands to Frankfurt Airport in Germany.

First we had to pass the difficult customs, they wanted to check our big lens :rtm: :sniper:
They thought we could have hidden some explosives or drugs in the lens.....strange people those custom guys  but just doing their job

We arrived at the gate and while waiting for boarding to start we spotted our plane

Image

Image

But after a pleasant flight we arrived at Oliver Tambo International Airport :P :P :P

Image

Fetched our rental car and drove to our friends in the Jo'burg area.
We spotted some local wildlife

Image

Did our shopping at the local supermarket and had a fantastic braai and enjoyed the rest of the evening with our wonderful friends.

The next morning we left early (at 5 am) to Paul Kruger Gate. There we arrived at 11 o'clock.

The bus is ready to enter the park….off we go

The first wildlife we spotted in the park were Elephant and Impala.

Image

On our way to Satara, Lake Panic was our first stop. We had heard wonderful things about this spot and were pleasantly welcomed by some Hippos having fun   , we also saw sunbathing Terrapins, Kingfisher, African darter, Crocodile, Heron, Goliath Heron.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

It was a very pleasant place to be.

We continued our route to Satara

Saw a pair of Giraffe.
Image

Bushbuck
Image
Image

On our route to Tshokwane on the H1-2 we had our first Lion sighting of this trip(it’s a bit far away and we had to peak through the leaves to be able to make a far from “decent” picture)

Is that you/your camera/lens, Vinkie ?

No unfortunately not MATTHYS, just imagine Apex Predator having to sit the whole trip with this lens on her lap

She had a D90 with a 70-300mm and D7000 with the Sigma 500mm 4.5 on her lap...that bruised her legs ...sorry Apex Predator for the discomfort :gflower: :k

Thank you Carol g, MATTHYS, barryels, Cape of Storms, Super Mongoose, Phokojwe, isinkwe and Trrp-trrrrrrrr for your kind comments

We continued our route to Satara.

We spotted a lonely steenbok….wonder where it’s mate was?

Our first toilets seats appeared

After we checked in at Satara, we quickly unpacked made a fast meal and got ready for the Night drive.
Apex Predator had had her doubts about doing a Night drive on the first day in the Park after having driven for such a long time….but it was worth it.

We saw lots of sightings like: Genet, Civet, AWC, Black Backed Jackal, Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Hyena but our driver didn’t find it necessary to stop and give the passengers the opportunity to make a photo…neither did the rest of the passengers seem to bother about it....

The only sighting he gave us time to be able to make a picture was this……..Serval….which was so cool seeing it “Live”.

After a quick stop at Satara we planned to go in the direction of the S90, but once we left the gate we decided to visit Nsemani Dam first.

Our first sighting after the lunch break was this nice Impala next to the road
Image

Image

At the dam we saw lots of hippos and a group of Elephants coming to drink, we also saw an Elephant that didn’t like to share his bath.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We made a video of the Irritated Elephant

After this wonderful sighting we followed the Satara-Olifants road, and left this road at the S90 turnoff.

We saw this Steenbok
Image

A little further on the S90 we had a special encounter with two Black-Backed Jackals hunting Guinea Fowls…this was very special…we also made a little video(quality isn’t very good…we didn’t have the cam very long and where very excited by the scene in front of us).

A short video of the Black-Backed Jackals

The Sunset came and surprised us with the wonderful scene
Image

Image

We saw this Elephant just before we turned to return to Camp.
Image

Once back we fired up our braai and had a nice cold Castle, and enjoyed a wonderful meal.
After diner we had a walk along the fence to stop at the Webcam waterhole and saw some critters.
We went to bed early because the next morning we would have our first of many morning drives.

Sorry for the long post....but we kept you waiting for a long time before we continued the Trip Report

Thank you, melph68, Trrp-trrrrrrrr, PetraJ, Melrockson, Cape of Storms, Phokojwe, Carol g, Pumbaa, Hilda, Meandering Mouse and isinkwe for your kind words.
PetraJ: the photo program on our computer seems to like to combine photos and make an animated gif.

After a short night, filled with roaring Lions we walked to the reception to get ready for the Morning Drive. We have had good experiences on the previous Morning Drives during our last trip that we were so excited. What would we see…?
Because we had heard the roaring Lions in the S100 area we asked the driver to go in that direction….luckily the driver took the H1-3 and turned of at the S100 turnoff.

The first animal we saw was a scrub hare, it was gone before we could take a photo…..but a few minutes later we could take lots of photos.
We saw our first Lion of the day, but wait no it wasn’t one Lion it were 5 male Lions playing in the early morning…one of the Lions had one eye but seemed to be the group leader, we called him Nelson.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We stayed with the Lions for 20 minutes, in the meantime a lot of cars had arrived and were trying to pass the truck the drive blocked the road a bit so we could take some photos, while the Lions went down to the river bed we drove on…we wondered what would be next…after such a fantastic start of the morning.

At the next turn I suddenly yelled STOP, our next sighting appeared, it was just as wonderful as the previous one: two Cheetahs sitting next to the road.
In some way the pictures didn’t turn out being of good quality…I was a bit disappointed once I saw them again when we returned home and watched them on the pc.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After the two Cheetahs disappeared into the bushes we drove on….cars passing us…there goes our advantage of a head start.

We saw this Dagga Boy
Image

Some Monkeys in the tree

We left the S100 and took the S41, at the little river crossing we saw some Hippos and lots of birds.

Image

A big Elephant appeared and then we saw our first daytime Honey Badger….it was so cool seeing this animal in real life. The Driver said it was very special seeing a Honey Badger during the day.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After leaving the S41 we took the H6 back to camp.
A Bateleur and this Juvenile Harrier Hawk

Image

Image

Two Hyenas and a Tusker, wonder if someone knows its name?
Image

We returned back to Satara, boiled some water, had a quick toilet break and left the camp taking the H1-4 towards Olifants
The first thing we saw where lots of Vultures in the Trees and near the waterhole just after we passed the S90.

Image

We saw three Kori Bustards and an Ostrich
We stopped at Ngotso Dam and had our breakfast(Coffee and Rusks…ohh I miss them)
We took the S127 and the S39 and stopped at Ratelpan Hide
We were welcomed by Hippo, Crocs, Hamerkop, Fish Eagle, Kingfischer, a Great Egret and a couple of Egyptian Goose.

Image

Image

Image

Image

On the S39 we saw some common game and continued to Nsemani Dam.
Here we saw some playing Elephants and on the other side of the road we saw this…….a LEOPARD our first daytime Leopard sighting….

Image

It didn’t move and we drove of after we had tried to take some photos and drove of to the S100.

Once we arrived on the S100 and we thought that our day couldn’t get better Apex Predator spotted……

Once we arrived on the S100 and we thought that our day couldn’t get better I(Apex Predator) spotted……these female Lions
Image

Image

Image

After taking some photos of these lazy ladies someone told us to drive to the next loop, because there had been some cubs playing on a dead tree earlier that day.
We drove to the spot and could only see some tails, so we decided to drive to N’wanesti Picnic stop for a short break and maybe we would be able to see them on our way back.
On the way back we only saw some common game and when we returned to the spot, we spotted a young shabby looking older Cub.

We took too many photos and all of a sudden Vinkie saw two younger cubs climbing the dead tree…..you can’t imagine how thrilled we were.
Image

Image

Image

After a while the older cub started calling his mother whom we had seen earlier, and she answered his call. He started walking onto the road and passed our car…calling his mother and the two little ones started to follow.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Suddenly more little cubs appeared from the bushes and walked onto the road and sat down, we had to peek around the parked cars to get some photos.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We left the scene happy about being able to witness these wonderful little creatures, and drove to the spot where we had last seen the mothers, hoping for the little cub to arrive….unlucky the cubs where still on their way over….
Suddenly a car parked next to us and a friendly guy asked us who we were, it was Bushcraft and The Cow and all their kids. He had recognized our yellow ribbon….
We had a chat and we told him about the cubs and the Leopard we had seen in the beginning of the afternoon at Nsemani Dam.
Bushcraft rushed to the Dam to see the Leopard….at that point we didn’t know that Bushcraft was a Leopard spotter and a Leopard magnet.
We also left in the direction of the dam to see if we could get a better photo of the Leopard.
We saw these on our way…
Image

Image

Image

Arriving at the dam it was already getting dark and the Leopard seemed to have left the scene….we did see this bathing Elephant and wondered if it was the same one we had seen earlier.
Image

Image

We returned to camp, and met Bushcraft near the reception, they invited us to come over later that evening to have a drink.
We went to our bungalow and had a wonderful Braai, after diner we went for a walk and arrived at Bushcraft and The Cows bungalow.
We chatted and had some drinks, laughed, Bushcraft gave us some Great tips for the other part of our Trip(Hluhluwe-Imfolozi) and we all had a wonderful evening.

to be continued...

Thank you all for the kind words  it makes it easier to write the TR 8)

Satara to Lower Sabie

Image

The next day we took the Satara-Orpen road to Nsemani Dam to check if the Leopard had returned.
Unfortunately it wasn’t there…

We took the S12 from Girivani dam to the H7 and returned to the dam again…by that time we met the Browns, who wanted to spot the Leopard too but in the meantime had seen some Lions at the H7 and H1-4 junction. We said goodbye because it was our last drive in the Satara area because we were heading to Lower Sabie.
On our way we saw:

Image

We took the S100 for the last time and drove the S41 and S90
Image

Image

Image

We returned at Satara Rest camp, packed our baggage and left for Tshokwane.

We saw this Tusker:
Image

We had a nice lunch at Tshokwane and took the Orpen loop, stopped at the View point and Apex Predator saw her first Boomslang(well I think it was one). It was sunbathing on top of the lookout building.
Image

Image

At Nkumbe View site on the H10 we enjoyed the African bushveld view.
Not long after we left Nkumbe we saw three Klipspringers
Image

Image

We continued on the H10 and saw our first Lions of the day doing their thing….sleeping.
Image

Image

An observing Kudu female and the mongoose seemed to be on the lookout.
Image

Image

We arrived at the Sabie bridge and got a nice view of the Sabie and the Rest camp.
Image

We checked in and drove to our Bungalow nice and close to the perimeter.

We decided that we still had some time left for a late afternoon drive and took the H4-2 road to Crocodile Bridge, we took some detours stopped at the Ntandamyathi Hide hoping to see the resident Lion pack(unfortunately they had gone for a walk or something else.)
We had some nice sightings.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We rushed back to camp because it was getting dark and the gate was about to close.
We came across these Monkeys spotting something, we didn’t have enough time to wait and drove on, spotted a Porcupine but it took off before we could make a photo.
Image

Image

We had a nice Braai and some Castles…went for a walk, enjoying the view and the sounds.
Because it had been a long day we fell asleep soon after we got into our bed.

To be continued...

Sorry for the delay but we have had some computer problems O/  …..the TT will continue now… :-)

Thank you hilda, Cape of Storms, Philip1, forestgump, Carolg, Pumbaa, Riaanf31, Super Mongoose, Meandering Mouse, Trp-trrrrrr, baryels, Phokojwe and isinkwe for your kind words.

The next morning we left on our First morning drive in the Lower Sabie area.

It was a quiet drive, in the beginning we only saw some common game.
Image

Just a few kilometers before we would reach the camp we saw this pack of Lions, because it was still very early the pictures didn’t turn out to be a nice as we hoped they would be.
Image

Image

Image

At the end of the Morning Drive we saw our second Goliath Heron of this trip.
Image

We also saw this Fish Eagle at Lubyelubye
Image

After having breakfast on the Lower Sabie Restaurant deck, enjoying the view of the grazing Hippos we took off for another day of animal spotting.

Image

Image

Image

On our way we saw a Giraffe.

Image

We took the S21, got stuck in a roadblock because somebody claimed to have seen a Male Lion disappearing in to the bushes and all the cars were parked in all directions. After having zigzagged through the roadblock we reached the Stevenson-Hamiltion Memorial Tablet and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Bushveld.

Image
Pale Chanting Goshawk
Image

We took the S114 and the H5(the Old Selati Rail Route, had some detours visted the Mpondo Dam and watched a huge herd of Waterbuck,.

Image

We continued on the H4-2 and crossed the Sabie and went all the way to Mlondozi because we had heard that someone had seen Cheetahs on the S29, unfortunately we missed them.
Had a nice view of the Mlondozi Dam and continued our rote on the S29 and S128, here we spotted a massive herd of 100+ buffalo……

Image

Image

Image

Image

It was starting to get late so we followed the H10 to the Lower Sabie Low level bridge where we saw this collard Hyena and a young Crocodile.

Image

Image

Image

Image

A Marabou Stork was our last sighting of the day…

Image

Image

We had a nice meal at the restaurant and went to bed early.

To be continued…

Our last full day at Lower Sabie.

Today would be our last day at Lower Sabie before we would leave for Hluhluwe-Imfolosi Game Reserve the next day.

This morning we left camp and took the H 4-1 north to find these Giraffes
Image

Image

When we continued our trip back South we saw some offenders at Sunset Dam.
Image

Saw this bird too
Image

We drove on and took the S137, at the intersection of the S137/S28 we met another couple who informed us that on the S107 heading towards the Nhlanganzwani Dam there had been a Lion kill and that some Hyenas had been seen in the area too.
We headed in that direction and first encountered the Hyenas and a little further along the road we saw the Lions walking towards the Dam…..there was a roadblock of slowly driving cars that followed the Lions…after a while the Lions disappeared into the Bushes and we headed towards the Dam hoping for them to maybe arrive at the dam to drink......they didn’t.
Image

Image

Image

Image

We returned to the Kill site and took some more pictures of the Hyenas who had moved the carcass to the other side of the road…..the smell of death was awful.
Image

Image

Image

We returned to camp had coffee and drove the S30 the Old Salitje Road hoping to find the Wild Dogs, when we crossed the Salitje we found this Hammerkop who had caught a fish.
Image

Image

Again we met a kind couple who informed us that he had seen two Sable Antelopes about 10k’s further on the road….we had to look at the right-hand side he told us…..we found them…it was a very special sighting…you don’t see two Sables every day.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Further on the road we saw these birds.
Image

Image

Image

On the H12 we saw some guys with a Bulls flag wrapped over their car who got out of the car throwing thing into the river.
Image

Saw a nice Kudu Family
Image

Image

Image

We saw these Bushbuck too
Image

We returned to the S30, came to a new roadblock, a Leopard had killed an Impala but apparently a Hyena had appeared and had stolen the kill. Because of the massive roadblock of three/four cars next to each other we decided to drive on….we didn’t see the Leopard….

Image

When we arrived at the Lower Sabie bridge, we met with Bushcraft who imformed us that he had seen the Leopard and that he had managed to get some pictures….so lucky….
Image

We went back to camp and headed to the restaurant deck to have a drink before we would have the Sunset drive. Tried my teleconverter on a Crocodile lying far from the camp.
