Although we still have to wait a bit until our next trip starts, I had a look at the pics from our trip in 2012 to get me in the mood for it. While I was doing that, I thought it would be an even better way to write a travel report.

31.08.2012

After checking in at the guest house in Upington, we spent the whole afternoon at the supermarket, leaving with 5 carts full of food, wood, charcoal, water, soft drinks, beer and Amarula for our two weeks in the park.

The next morning we went to the supermarket again to pick up the frozen meat and left for KTP around 11:00 am and arrived at about 2:00 pm. The check-in went very smoothly and the staff was very helpful. We even managed to change our booking. Originally, we had booked two nights at KK and one at Uri. But a last check on the forums before departure produced the information that another night at Uri was available.

Then we deflated the tyres and started to explore KTP.

Of course, the question was what KTP would deliver on our first trip here ever. Reading all the lovely trip reports I had high expectations and made a wish list (in no specific order):

cheetah
a good leopard sighting
black-maned lion
caracal
AWC
meerkats
brown hyena
honey badger
striped pole cat
porcupine
eland
red hartebeest
kudu
a kori bustard in flight
martial eagle
owls
pygmy falcon
whistling rat
bat-eared fox

Closer to departure date I got serious doubts and decided to expect nothing at all and to enjoy whatever we will see.

One reason for this was that we nearly could not go on this trip. My SO had some kidney stones and had to have surgery which caused some complications. He was not feeling well and only received final permission to go one day before departure. Although this meant, we had to take it slowly, we were just happy we could visit KTP after all.

The next question was what will be our first sighting. This time, I was modest and suggested springbok while the SO was very optimistic to vote for lion. Actually, it was a usually very rare sighting – eland

We were very lucky to see some of the eland that had moved from Botswana to KTP during our trip.

Coming up next was a Verreaux’s eagle-owl

Image

Now I was thrilled. KTP started to deliver right away. We had two great sightings just outside of TR already. And the next one (for me) followed right away – mice in a bush

Image

We saw a tawny and the first kori bustard. I snapped happily not knowing how plentiful they are in KTP. I think on this drive alone we saw about 10 of them.

What an eventful drive we had, causing us to arrive at KK only at about 5:40 pm. We checked in into bungalow 4 and admired the view

Image

and later the first sunset

Image

That evening we were freezing on the verandah for the first time but that should continue the following evenings and mornings with temperatures around 2 degrees.

While we were getting ready, we were watching some red-eyed bulbuls, sparrows and sociable weavers cleaning our braai and a shrew was around as well

Back at KK we saw a steenbok and some mice

Image

After breakfast we packed the car and Jacques showed us the resident barn owl and wild cat which unfortunately were hiding very well. Then we left for Urikaruus.

They were concerned about the secretary bird and moved to the other side of the road
