Usually we visit South Africa in september when it is still “cold” and not green yet. But I always wanted to see Kruger when there is water in the natural waterholes and the migratory birds are still around. Thus, when we stumbled upon a special offer by SAA, we decided to go in march this year.

I was a little bit worried going to a very hot, wet and green park. Reading other trip reports, I was afraid we were not going to have any sightings at all.

In regard to this we thought that it does not matter, if we do not see any lions, having had many sightings before. I would be very happy if we see wild dogs, maybe animals we have never seen before and many lifers. Of course, leopard, being my favourite animal, was on the wish list as well.

28.02.2013 – 01-03-2013

We left Germany on a sunny but cold winter day and arrived in Johannesburg on march 1st. It took us over an hour to get through immigration, which is quite unusual. Finally we could pick up our car, which went smooth. I was surprised that it was quite chilly in South Africa. At about 11 am we left the airport and arrived in Nelspruit at about 2 pm. Actually, this was the first time ever we did not take a wrong turn at the airport.

We had decided to stay at a guest house the first night to give us enough time to do our shopping. We had made a reservation by e-mail four days before and were surprised that we did not receive a confirmation – maybe it arrived after we had left. Nevertheless we went straight to the guest house. We nearly did not get in as we ran out of airtime while we tried to call them to open the gate.

We were greeted by a very nice guy who knew nothing about a reservation. He called reservations and we were informed that the computer system lost all e-mails since it was struck by lightning. Unfortunately, they gave our room to someone else and were fully booked. The lady at reservations told us that this is not a problem. She will book us into another guest house. We waited on the verandah and were offered some coffee and cookies.

After a while the nice guy returned and told us that the other guest houses were fully booked as well and he was going to move out of his room to make place for us. How kind of him. They started the cleaning right away and we could move in a short while later. What a relief.

It started drizzling when we left the guest house at 4 pm to do our shopping. Our first stop was at the MTN store to buy some airtime for our phone and a dongle. No problem with the airtime since we had a SIM card already. But we did not have our passports with us. Thus – no dongle. Well, we will have to return tomorrow.

Then we went to shop for groceries. As it was close to 7 pm by now and we were tired after the long trip, we only grabbed some slices of pizza at the Spar which we ate at the guest house and went to bed early.

We were having a yummy breakfast at 7 am. Then we packed and went to the MTN store again. Another very nice guy helped with installing the software which took almost an hour, giving me time to teach him some german. Then we finally were off to KNP.

At 11 am we entered Malelane gate, decorated the car and got the cameras ready.

Image

One of our expectations was met. The vegetation was dense and the grass was very high. Just to give you an idea, here are some pictures. Don’ t worry not all of my pictures are like that.

Do you spot the animals?

I would like to start with our rhino sightings. In total we had 14 sightings of 21 individual animals. This being so few as we think three times we saw the same ones again in other places. Counting them as well, we would be at 28.

Back to 02.03.2013:

Of course, we discussed what would be our first sighting. Having followed the forums, I opted for leopard or ellie, SO said impala. Guess who was right – SO of course.

Since it was late already, it was a quiet day. We drove the H3 to Afsaal and saw our first ellies and the first person who broke the rules. A woman got out of the car on the bridge to take a pic.

Image

A stop at renosterpan provided impalas, our first golden orb

Image

and some zebras.

Image

We had lunch at Afsaal. Unfortunately, it was not very delightful since the flies wanted their share of our food. Yuck. Actually, these were the only flies on our trip. They seemed to have a meeting there. For the first time we visited Afsaal, there were hardly any birds around and even the scops owl seemed to have moved somewhere else. All the signs were removed.

After lunch we proceeded on the H3 towards Skukuza. Not much game but we saw some birds.

Image
Image
Image

On the H1-2 we saw some nyalas. They were quite well hidden.

Image

Close to Tshokwane we had our first tawny sighting.

Image

Tshokwane was still closed according to the flood update. As we arrived at 4 pm it actually was closed, but it appeared to be closed for the day and not permanently.

Since the SO was tired of driving, he asked me to take the wheel for the rest of the trip to Satara. Usually I do not like driving in KNP that much because of the ellies. We had to reverse on tiny dirt roads a couple of times before and I was quite happy that I wasn’t doing the driving then. But this was a tar road and I took over. As you can guess about an hour later some ellies decided to cross the road. Luckily they were quite relaxed and disappeared into the bush on the other side.

We arrived at Satara at 5:30 pm and after renewing our wild card bungalow 176 was allocated to us. Unfortunately it is quite far from the fence.

We downloaded our pictures and had a nice braai. While we were having our nightcap, an African wild cat moved between the bungalows on the other side - too far away and gone too fast for a pic.

The beginning of a beautiful day

Image

Just outside camp we saw some collared pratincoles and then heard and saw our first ever woodie -unfortunately hiding well.

Image

I wanted to go down the S 100 but since that meant driving straight towards the rising sun, we went down H 1-3 to Sweni waterhole. We saw a warthog and a couple of birds. We turned and went up H 6.
Finally some game

Image

Then we saw our first white stork in South Africa. The noisy bee-eater was moving around it all the time, probably looking for food.

Image

My first nearly decent pic of a grey go-away-bird

Image

We saw giraffe and warthog

Image

And another first, an African hawk eagle

Image

Shortly after that we saw a guy on a bike with a South African flag attached to it. He returned our wave quite awkwardly. I thought he was a ranger as we had seen them on bikes before. But something was wrong. Reflecting on it, he was wearing no uniform but plain (although green) clothes. We were getting worried and hurried towards N’wanetsi to tell the attendant about him. He told us he was looking after the water. So, everything was okay, but it makes you wonder.

Since there was nothing to see at the dam, we turned on S 41. Then we saw three vultures in a tree. More and more vultures arrived.

Image

Finally we thought we found the site of the kill but they did not seem to be feeding

Image

On the S 100 we returned to Satara. We saw a nice breeding herd of ellies.

While we were having lunch, I developed a severe headache. That was it with the doxycyclin for me. We put up a couple of bug-off candles in the evenings and I used Tabard. That worked very well.

Because of the headache, we had a nap and went only on a short afternoon drive to Nsemani dam. We saw brown snake eagle, grey heron, common sandpiper and a couple of crowned lapwings

Image

Returning to Satara we saw another African hawk eagle

Today we took the H 7 to Orpen.

We were surprised that the African hawk eagle was still around and we saw the woodie (or maybe another one) again

Image

typical Kruger roadblocks

Image

Image

At Nsemani dam we saw African spoonbills. Unfortunately they were too far off. We turned into the dirt road behind the dam to get a better view but the vegetation was too dense. We only met the resident baboons. There was a fish eagle as well.

Further down the road a Wahlberg’s eagle

Image

Close to the S 36 we saw our first buffs

Image

And this little cutie

As we approached Phelwana I saw three heads popping out of the grass on the side of the road on the driver’s side. The SO was driving but did not see them. I shouted “stop, cheetah” and the SO braked immediately. He tried to reverse but was a little bit too hectic and he scared the cheetahs. They crossed the road in a hurry and disappeared into the long grass. They were too fast for a pic. Too bad, this was only our second ever cheetah sighting in KNP. Since all of them seemed to be cubs, we waited about 20 minutes in case mom would follow. Since that did not happen, we continued towards Orpen.

The H 7 is still closed and we had to take the S 106 (Rabelais road). We saw some lone ellies.

Close to Orpen we had an impala roadblock and saw some zebras as well

Image

This roller was having breakfast in the middle of the road

Image

Looks like a scorpion or red roman to me

But he was disturbed by a taxi and took off

We had a couple of great sightings in Orpen camp. My first ever chameleon – that was high on my wish list too

Image

A cardinal woodpecker

Image

And we saw a snake as well.

When we returned to Satara we had another roadblock

Image

He approached us and this was the only time we reversed for an ellie on this trip. We did this to be on the safe side. He was rather relaxed as well.

We saw a rather shy kudu.

Image

And a Burchell’s starling

In the afternoon we took the H 1-4 north. We saw warthogs, zebras, vultures and a variety of birds.
We stopped at Ratelplan where we saw hadedas and some blacksmith lapwings

Image

On the way back another kudu

Image

And an ellie followed by bee-eaters

Image

Tonight we did not have a visitor. We woke up at 3 am though by the sound of a dropped bottle. I was wondering if the people next door were having a party. The SO was more awake and got up. He said honey badger but by the time I got up it had disappeared already. Obviously it had raided our garbage bin.

Today we were booked on a morning drive. It started with our first lion sighting at the intersection of H 1-4 and H 7. Unfortunately it was still dark and they were on the move. Here is just a picture of proof

Image

We proceeded on the H 1-4 and found a hyena which was very interested in a guinea fowl roadblock. It did not attempt a hunt, though.

Image

The sun was rising

Image

We saw some giraffes

Image

And then our guide pointed out a steenbock

Image

It really looked like a steenbock from far away but actually it seems to be a duiker.

Close to the Sweni we had our second cheetah sighting.
