Lark... Rufous-naped I reckon...

I made this ID as a result of its call so, if I have made a wrong ID, I give you permission to yell at me

Rufous-naped Lark
Mirafra africana
Food: Mainly insects as well as millipedes, arachnids and seeds.
Habitat: Open grassland with scattered perches, Acacia savanna and cultivated lands.
Habits: Usually solitary but sometimes in pairs. Flushes reluctantly and easily over looked when not breeding. Flight bouncy with short bursts of wingbeats, dropping suddenly into the grass then runs mouselike in a crouched posture over grasstufts. When near the nest, they fly about thudding their wings as a distraction display.

Where did you see this Candy's Style? If it was @ Rietvlei then the call could not have been mistaken with anything else.

The buffy rufous belly with whitish throat & streaky breast is a good indication that it is a Rufousnaped Lark.

I agree with a Lark. But which one?

It has no conspicuous white eyebrow or facial patterns so that rules out the following occurring in an area north of Rustenburg:

Dusky Lark.
Fawn-Colored Lark.
Monotonous Lark
Red-capped Lark
Sabota Lark
Melodius Lark.

Leaves basically this list of Larks according to Roberts:

Eastern Clapper Lark.
Flappet Lark.
Rufous-naped Lark

It has an exceptionally short tail and as Niall said, it might be missing tail feathers. However the tail won't help us with making any id and it is a pity as the outer tail feathers' colors are very good indicators.

I would chuck out Eastern Clapper Lark becuase of the dark upperparts of the bird in question.

Flappet or Rufous-naped Lark?

Again, not a very easy one. I will have to look at it for some time before giving my answer.

My call - Rufous-naped lark... based on the bit of red one can see on the cap (nasty bird, normally they display a crest making ID easier ) and a bill which is noticably more robust than that found with the flappet lark.

Will this be the Eastern or Western form?

Considering the area (Rustenburg) it tells you east. Considering the bird is NOT pale, that confirms east. The Western form is a real "washed-out" version.

Please, i need identification for this bird. :
The picture was taken the last november near Satara.
