Has anyone noticed if the S33, Vutomi Road has been reopened per chance?

Went past Balule low level bridge yesterday 14 November late afternoon and the bridge still closed off. The Vutomi road S33 still closed off.

Elsa,

The final decision if the road is open or not must still be taken. I am still waiting for the feedback from either Joep or Lesego since last week when I asked about the opening of the bridge.

Joep Stevens wrote:
Dear All,

It is with much regret that I inform you that the Balule Bridge is not going to be completed before December holidays and probably only by March 2013. I am not going to dwell into reasons for this. A decision will be taken tomorrow whether the (temporary) gravel coffer crossing will be opened for public use or not. For Balule guests, please keep in mind that check-in can also be done at Satara.

With regards.

Whilst I most probably can't fully imagine the magnitude of restoring the park roads and camps to their pre flood conditions I wondered if there was any way possible to obtain more specific information than is currently been provided.

For instance the regular announcements made regarding these issues whilst informative do not advise on the progress been made, but appears to be merely a skrinking database of information of what has not been restored. Would it not be more informative to supply the folowing information eg.

Pafuri Picnic Site - Severe Flooding an Inaccesabile (status), Grading Roads (progess), Expected Opening xx/xx/2013 (conservative time frame). I would also suggest that at every announcement you advise where the status of restoration has changed from the previous announcement.

I would suggest that the powers that be have some idea as to the time frame to complete various tasks, otherwise you would not be able to perform future online bookings on camps that are currently closed.

Whilst I could only assume that officials are relunctant to provide the full information for reasons such as not dissapointing patrons due to unforeseen time delays etc. the lack of more insightful information does hamper the most optimum planning of a booking. For instance, I am going to Punda Maria in April as a base to visit my most favourite part of the park namely Pafuri. I can keep my booking hoping the area will be somewhat restored or I can change to a less desirable camp (imo) based on the information available, only to find that on arrival the area may be open (status changes have in some instances moved from, inaccesible and flood damaged, to a status of open in a single post).

I believe the park management can't be faulted on the tremendous effort they are putting in both physically and administately to restore the park and provide information to it's guests especially when faced with the unenviable magnitude of the task they are performing, therfore it would be remiss of me to critisize them, I am rather trying to suggest improvements to the information supplied to passionate patrons like myself, who live far a field, only get the opportunity once a year to visit the kruger and therefore want to optimise there holiday based on the most current source of information available. Whilst I can deduce what camps may be open at a certain time, I am unable to gather any exact information on the progress of the surrounding infrastructure in proximity to the camps which is vital to me making an informed descision on my booking.

Thank you for the tremendous work you are doing, but please could you provide a little more information.

A humble yet desparate patron

Nicolette, the road between Orpen and Satara is open, there is a detour onto the Rabelais loop to get round the breach in the tar road.
When we were at Tshokwane 2 weeks ago, the shop was not yet open, but the toilets were all operational and many folks were braaing and doing their own thing.

Janine, sure we will get further info on the reopening of camps as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if the gravel roads in the south are in for major reconstruction or just minor repairs? The reason I am asking is I am going to KNP in April and would love to travel the S3 and S30 but they are both still closed.

Canis, when we were there 2 weeks ago the S3 was fully open as we travelled it right from near the Kruger gate to the S1 and then continued on down the Albasini Road to P/kop.
Possibly since been reclosed for further repairs, I am not sure.
The S30 was still closed but I am sure it will be open by April.
Obviously some of the roads were more badly damaged than others requiring more extensive repair work.

That's good news Elsa. I really prefer the quieter gravel roads to the tar roads thats filled with "big 5 hunters" during peak seasons. I have never travelled the S3 before and look forward to exploring it. Is it a good road in terms of sightings, scenery and atmosphere? I truly hope the S30 is open as I always use that road as an alternative to travel to LS. The traffic on the H4-1 Skuk/LS highway can get too much although sightings are usually outstanding on that road.
