I have asked a few people about this bird and got many different replies. :?
Would love to hear some more opinions. :)

I'v eposted the picture to some of the expert birders in SA and they all seem to agree that the bird in your photo is a Wahlberg's Eagle.

I include the comments of Trevor Hardarker one of SA's top birders below:

I suppose one needs to approach this in a logical way. Firstly, habitat - this is clearly bushveld and not forest, so Crowned Eagle is not really an option, besides which it is a BIG bird.

Then, on to size. This is clearly a compact, smallish raptor. Tawny and Steppe Eagles are large, powerful eagles. This bird has a small bill and smallish talons. It cannot be a Tawny or Steppe just on size.

The only compact eagle with this colouration and the indication of a crest is Wahlberg's Eagle.

As to the age of this bird, it is very difficult to say from this photo, but current knowledge suggests that there is no difference in plumage characters based on the age of this particular species.

The image quality is poor, but the sky is big with lot's of space so the birds where fare away when shots taken :lol:

The two first images are of the same bird, the last image is another raptor.

Hope anybody can assist on these even if the quality is terrible.

(I feel the tail is longer on the second bird, even if the tailfeathers are spread like a fan on the first one. The legs seems to be closer to the tail edge on the first bird as well)

I'm no expert on the matter but I'll give you my 2c worth.

I'm almost 100% sure is that of a Wahlberg's Eagle. The long and narrow tail is usually a give-away. Got a pic on Robert's that's almost the mirror of yours.

Wahlberg's Eagle. The slight crest is a good pointer but the overall impression ofthe head and bill being rather small identifies it as such.

Aquila eagles are not easy but one soon develops an appreciation for the smaller size and less robust built Wahlberg's Eagle. Just keep at it.

Hi, Kwando! It's been a while!

I think all the pix are of Wahlberg's. Dark eye colour, narrow tail and chest, "dainty" beak, all point to the same ID.

OK, I'm confused :?

Could someone confirm perhaps what the status of Wahlberg's Eagle in Kgalagadi is? I've still never visited KTP so I can't speak from experience but it's not a bird that I associate with the northern Cape.

Your bird does indeed look like a Wahlberg's Eagle to me. So does this mean that they do occur in KTP?

Where's TG? I'm sure he'd know more about this.

maybe wahlberg's eagle with juvenile. It seems to me the one on the left side gave something to eat to the other... It was near Berg-en-Dale the 7.3.08 in the evening.
