Salomon Joubert's triple vol. History of KNP; any reviewers?

Unread postby button999 » Sat Aug 22, 2009 6:17 pm

Can anyone comment upon whether or not the recent three volume history of Kruger, authored by Dr Salomon Joubert, is a worthwhile read and if its approximately R1300-00 price tag represents fair value? I was also wondering if readers of this publication think these volumes add SUBSTANTIALLY to the, by now well trodden, stories of the park's origins and all the colour plates of trees and animals add to or detract from the contribution of the publication? I guess I am afraid to spend that amount and find that the volumes tell me what I and others who are familiar with Kruger history already know, despite the magnificent way in which the volumes are bound and presented in their handsome & matching case Many thanks.

Hello button999 and welcome to the forums.
Was really hoping someone else would answer your question because, although we do have the set (bought pre-publication as a present for hubby), I have not done more than perused some of the contents
Their scope is really vast -- full of all sorts of interesting facts and figures from the history of the park, to the thinking of the day on fauna, flora and amphibians, tourism, water points, fences, etc, etc.
Absolutely not a novel, but rather an immense reference work.
Extremely interesting

This set of books is by far the best money I have spent. However I would caution against it if you are only looking for more stories from the bush. This set will not help you.

It tells you no more about fauna and flora than you would get from your normal guides. What it will give insight into is how the Kruger developed, how it was managed, and things people wouldn't really go out of their way to find out about the greatest park out there.

I would highly recommend that everyone should get themselves this set but don't come knocking and say that I wasted your money. If you feel that way after reading these books then the only thing wasted was the opportunity to learn.

I once started out learning about the Kruger with only a guide on the animals, after doing a field guiding course I understood how the ecosystem and everything in it interacts. To this end I now have books on reptiles, insects, fish, trees, flowers, even grass and more mundane things.

Humans are part of the ecosystem, wether we like it or not, and this set of books provides valuable insight into our own behaviour with regards to the Kruger ecosystem. i give it a big  !!!

I would say that these books are a must for Kruger Park lovers!
We also bought them pre publication and there is so much reading it will take me years to get through it all and then I know I will start at the beginning again

WE also have a pre-publication set. For anyone really interested in the goings on in the KRUGER PARK up to 1994, this set is a good purchase. Salomon Joubert has done excellent research work and everything is meticulously correct - as can be expected.

I have been informed that a second edition of this wonderful volume is planned to become available later this year.

I can recommend this set which has been compiled by a scientist and written in good readable and understandable English, to anyone who is really interested in the intricacies of Nature Conservation in the Kruger National park..

Only 500 copies have been reprinted. At the R849 pre-production price, this is a steal and a must have for all collectors of Kruger Park books. It is likely that the value of these books will escalate soon after being released. So hurry, while stocks last. And no I am not earning any commission for saying this.
