Happy New Year!!!

Answers to last years #30! 5 participants - thanks!

1.cut throat finch - no problems with this one!!! Fairly distinct red under the chin.
Image

2. blue cheeked beeeaters - the lack of blue gorget along with a darker rustier yellow throat differentiates this bird from the swallow tailed - was hard to see the tail on these guys
Image

3.crimson breasted shrike - no problems!
Image

4. european beeeater - yellow throat with turquoise underparts separates this bee eater from the rest in the region!
Image

5.southern red bishop - also a distinct bird - no problems here!
Image

6.Little bee eater - black gorget and buff underparts make this bee eater distinct - no problems!
Image

7. Red headed weaver - this was a bit more tricky as the bird is underneath the nest having just left it! This nest is typical also! The 'red' was part of the hint!
Image

8. diderick's cuckoo - no problems here!
Image

9. red throated wryneck - this one was also a bit challenging - the 'red' hint along with a bird with rusty throat and upper chest with white lower chest finely streaked black gave the game away!
Image

10.blue waxbill, violet eared waxbill, black cheeked waxbill and green winged pytilia - no troubles here!

Hi Ducklings!

The New Year is older than two weeks already, and most of you are back at work after a lovely holiday! Time really flies!

Don't be shocked if you see that the Ducklings Challenges topic has shrunk from 109 pages to only one. All the answers to all the challenges for 2013 - 2014 can be found here: Index to Birding school for Ducklings Challenges.

All the best for 2015, and I wish you great success with your birding and challenges through the year! :gflower:

PS: I forgot to add, should you need any help with Duckling Challenges Jaytea and all who are assisting here, please don't hesitate to PM barryels or myself. We offered to assist with these challenges in August last year, but it seems that Sky had already made other arrangements.

Hi Ducklings,

Since it went all quiet on the Ducklings topic, umtali1 has agreed to start with the 2015 Duckling challenges on Monday, 26 January 2015, and will help out here until the end of February 2015!

:thanx: umtali1! It is really appreciated! :gflower:

We have also decided that umtali1 will post only five birds per Duckling Challenge, and these challenges will run from Mondays to Sundays, which means the answers for Duckling #1/2015 will only be posted on 5 February 2015. With less birds to ID and three days more for your answers, should give everybody a fair chance to participate in the challenges!

If anyone has more suggestions for the Duckling Challenges, please, we would love to hear from you!

:hello: everyone

Thank you to Jaytea for providing us with some challenges last year :gflower: :gflower:

You've all had lots of time off from bird id-ing and I know you're all itching to get the pages turning again
So it's time to dust off the books and answer this challenge.

I'm breaking you in gently with some easy birds. There are only 5 for you to id, so let's have lots of participants.

:hello: Are there any Ducklings out there??

So far I've received one response :hmz: As we're halfway through the weekend I thought it is time for a reminder. So start  . It shouldn't take long as there are only five birds to ID. Could be done over that :lotsocoffee:

You have until Thursday to submit your answers.

Are there anymore Ducklings out there?
You have one day left to submit your answers. So come on, have a go, even if you've never dappled your toes in the waters before!

Thank you to the four participants so far :gflower: ................

Answers to #1/2015.

There were 5 participants; 3 with all correct; one with 3/5; one with 2/5.
Some of you tried without the books
Thanks to you all for participating :gflower: :gflower:

#1/2015

1)Black shouldered kite.
The distinctive red eye was the clue to this smallish grey and white raptor. The black bill and yellow cere also apparent, together with the wings projecting beyond the tail.

Image

2)Juvenile saddlebilled stork.
I hoped to confuse you as this bird was resting on its tibiotarsal joints, reducing its height!

Image

3)Ant eating chat.
This dumpy medium-sized chat with a short tail and fairly long legs was a little more challenging. Sooty brown plummage, except for white carpal patch (m), and black beak and legs.

Image

4)Swallow tailed bee eater.
The deeply forked tail is distinctive.

Image

5)Yellow billed kite.
The yellow bill and dark eye gave this one away.

Image

Thanks for taking part.
Hope to hear from you and a few others for the next challenge which will be up soon!

Time for Ducklings #2/2015.
