Hi forumties,

on my recent last trip to KTP i had a very rare sighting that brought me to the idea to open up this topic.
We all know the general game, predators and raptors in the park. But there is more to see i assume.
Maybe Kgalagadi TFP can comment whether the sightings are really rare and by the way he knows what is going on in his park.

So let us share our really rare sightings on this place.

Here is the starter. He tried really hard to improve the street in the Auob valley

Great thread...Little Simba.Your rare sighting is that what we call a dune rat??? My rarest sighting must be that of a rock monitor. The photos have appeared in " The Story of the Kalahari girls" as well as the KTP animal thread (I think)...but I will submit them again. He was huge and he was scary : ( Not the best of photos I am afraid. : )





We saw this rock monitor in 2004...never seen one since!!

It's what we call a Mull. Sorry, do not know that one in English version. They're living in the underground, digging their corridors.
What a rare sighting

Have nothing to add but would like to follow the discussion and , perhaps if I'm lucky in April, I can add something rare. Interesting that you got the mole in full sun Simba.

It is perhaps not the sighting you are looking for and unfortunately we did not take a picture as we ourselves did not believed it
at Lijersdraai we saw an abondened car with doors open in the middle of the road and when we looked further we discovered two legs hanging over the big tub. Somebody checking the water level? when we looked closer into the car driving by slowly we saw a women who was hiding under the dashboard. Once she saw us she made us clear in hand signals that we should drive on and after she shouted something to the legs a man came running to the car, told us to mind our own business, jumped into the car and they drove off.
We were so stunned we forgot to take the pictures to prove this (luckily) really rare sighting of unidentified species.....

i can add a marabou to this section. We saw him in may 2006 between melkvlei and kij kij.

Rare, but a less good story, a Brown hyena during the midday! Just outside Twee rivieren, heading for the waterhole...





Check his lower jaw, it's broken on both sides, maybe met a lion? But he's in hyena heaven now...

Honey badger,
AWC kill,
Black headed heron,
Brown hyena,
Gus Mills.

@Duques: Are you sure your Hyena is gone ?

Rarest sightings:

warthog at Unions End,
an albino goshawk also at Unions End
and an African Fish Eagle at Dalkeith in January 2003.

Bit hard to eat with only the upper (unmovable) jaw isn't it? It drank liters of water, probably against the hunger....

My rarest sighting came in Feb this year when I saw a large Kudu bull and his cow at the Craig Lockheart waterhole one evening. I am not sure how common/rare they are but in all my trips this was a first for me.

My rarest sightings are:

- Hadeda in 2003
- Rock monitor in 2007
- Kudu bull
- Brown Hyaena with broken lower jaw (the same as DuQues saw)
- Male leopard on an adult (!) male Gemsbok kill
- Three cape cobra's raiding a sociable weaver nest

Kudu are not all that rare, except south of Dikbaardskolk.
