The Park is very well signposted, but do invest in a map at the entrance gate, as this will allow you to plan your routes in advance. GPS does not work everywhere as not all of the Park has cellphone signals.

Any Help will highly be appreciated

Yes, it is doable - allow at least 9 hours for the trip going at a steady 40 and not stopping too often. As billyf said " not too many ellie roadblocks" - and north of Shingwedzi allow for a couple of delays due to Dagga Boys!

I am not convinced it's a good idea.
I once did Shingwedzi to Satara and we just made the gates.
There were loads of good sightings on the way and we stopped often on the trip.
As we got nearer Satara and time was running out, we drove past a lion kill, and didn't have time to stop.

Drive time??

Unread postby TJDfairport » Tue Apr 02, 2013 4:46 am

My wife and I are planning our trip to KNP. Are we trying to drive too far in one day travelling between Berg-en-dal and Olifants rest camps? Thanks for your help and advice.

A very warm welcome to you TJDfairport. :D I do hope that you have a wonderful trip.

It is 219 km from Berk n Dal to Olifants. That is a very do-able distance. It is also a very interesting drive covering lots of different eco-zones. Certainly some productive game viewing opportunities.

It is recommended that one factors in about 25km/hr. That leaves you plenty of time.

Don't be fooled by the relatively short distances between camps as it takes waaaaay longer than you think especially when a cheetah decides to walk across the road in front of you with cubs in tow and decides to lie next to the road with the cubs frolicking - you won't want to do your trail.

Animals always appear when you are in a hurry especially just before camp closing time.

Bateleur to Olifants

Unread postby Leaping Lizards » Tue Jun 17, 2014 2:27 pm

Hi There all

Has anyone done the drive from Bateleur to Olifants?
How long is it more or less, how long will it take? Will we need to get on with things?

Thanks and regards

Bateleur to Olifants is between 130 and 150 km, depending on the route:

From Bateleur back to the tar road is 21 km along the last part of the Red Rocks loop: This would take at least one hour.
From that junction to Letaba is 85 km if you stick to the tarred road (in my case that would take about 3 hours at least), so I figure 4 hours to Letaba.
Then your options are either sticking with the tarred road to Olifants (about 30 km?) or taking the river road (about 40 km). So I guess another 2 hours at least.

I would take leave Bateleur early-ish and aim to have tea at Mooiplaas and lunch at Letaba. Then a nice drive along the river to Olifants.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum!

Do you mean the distances travelling inside the park or outside?
If inside its a long way at 283km and at the low speed limit would not advisable!
If you are talking about driving outside the park between the 2 gates then I would say have a look

Have a look Map

Hi there
I have on two occasions driven more or less the same distance in the park in a day - once from Shimuwini (near Phalaborwa) to Berg en Dal (near Malelane) and the other time from Olifants to Berg-en Dal. I have vouched not to try and drive these distances in the park in a single day again. Keeping to the speed limit, stopping to stretch legs and watch animals, makes it a long long drive. So yes, it can be done, but I would advise that you break it up if you can. There are many interesting stops between Malalane and Phalaborwa including a number of camps with restaurants and picnic sites.
