At a dam a baby hippo with mum and elephants.
On the bridge (near Skukuza) another trio

Near wind mill De Laportea a pile of 2 lions and 3-4 lioness

Image

The bungalow was really luxurious (the most luxurious till now...but expensive), near the restaurant and near the point of meeting, who was the swimming pool. The view... oh... the view...

Image

Elephants was grassing and bathing in the river bed,

Image

vervet was spy on

Image

and stripe mongooses running around and digging

Image

I meet Aboon and SO, who was waiting for "aircon".

I did't know I have to bring something to eat and drink… so I had time to return in "my" fridge to get "chicken ready to braii".

I met some well know people, like Restio (Freda), Boorgatspook, Ralph, Freda (Restio), Nedret, DinkyBird, (Hawk, CC), and a lot of other (I don’t' remember all the name…). I thank the musketeer who was busy with my curlpaper,

Image

and apologize for my early departure. I was so tired, 4 weeks in the park and almost 5000 km… I have to sleep early, and tomorrow I have to return north, to Olifants, again some km and a little bit sad… the last days in the park…

Olifants 15/16/17.3.2008 bungalow No 1 – Ludwig bungalow

15.3 - 1

I leave Skukuza with regrets, "my" bungalow was so nice, so luxury, I don't take the time to have advantage and I miss the cricket… but Olifants is far away…

I took the tar roads just before Satara and then "the pupils way" (le chemin des écoliers) H6 and S41, and again S100, H14, H8 a very long way, but productive.

First, here you are the sunrise

Image

with a crusty detail

Image (saw only with the enlargement)

En route, I saw kudu, 2 rhinos, baby hippo,

Image

vulture.

At Mazithi dam, goliath heron, hamerkop fishing, young fish eagle trying to fish

Image but no success

and then lions on the road,

Image

staying some time and disappear into the bush

Image

à suivre...

Then I saw a grey hornbill, very shy bird opposite to her yellow brothers, and at least have a picture… from the back  , in a dust's cloud, somebody arrived  (as usual) and he flew away, and impalas fighting, again a Sarpe's grysbock, carmine bee eater, a so beautiful coloured bird and normal game.

And again a poor giraffe, a young one, very shy, with a swelling leg, front left leg, maybe only a sprain .. I hope

Image

Then I saw very busy zebra's meeting

Image

family of warthog and a couple of saddle billed stork "en amour", some beautiful parades

Image

and buffalos, zebras, ground hornbill

Image

At Ngontso dam, some elephants, which one, I think, hold interesting tusks

Image

Then elephants from the bridge with a little one, tortoise, hippos.

A very big windstorm got up, impossible to do a fire, it was too dangerous. During the night I have to wedge the door with a chair, too much noise for sleeping…
And… the morning after… :? the best view of the park was…

The sky was low and sad this morning, the river very upset

Image

but no rain, and the wind a little bit less strong, thanks goodness, I have a river walk :D

The first animal I saw was a millepede

Image

And then, en route for the walk, hyenas who, as per the guides, who laugh a lot, killed one of their baby

Image

indeed guides don't like hyenas  .
If I'm not wrong, same thing arrived for lions and certainely other animals...

The river walk was easy compared to the morning walk, flat… down by the river side ( ). We saw hippos, not so far away

Image

and you can saw the swirl of the water and the colour

Image

after this terrible night :?

After a little rest I went to Satara (to buy some croissants  ) through S44-S93-S46-H1-5 and return by the tar road, then S89-S90-S92.

I saw again a magnificent woodland kingfisher,

Image

a chameleon, who took her time to cross the road,

Image

much more than a tortoise, leopard or not :?
a double banded sandgrouse ,

Image

then a big herd of elephants crossing the road

Image

but any bad intention

à suivre…

Yes, it will be interesting to know why some peoples, and guides don't like hyenas. Maybe somebody here can explain that, what hyenas have so bad reputation ?
Most of people believe they eat only carrions, but they are very good hunters, good mothers etc...

That’s like it is with so many things in life: People have their prejudices and follow them without being open for the real facts. Like you are saying they are good hunters and raise their young with the same love like the animals most people like more because “they are so cute”. At least till they are bitten by them for the first time . . .
Hyenas always get a bad reputation in any movie or has anybody seen a movie where the hero is taking care for or rescued by a hyena? If you come close to them, especially to the young ones, you discover their real beauty.

On the return way I saw a yellow "coccinelle" (VW), nice car in the bush  normal game, hyena, 2 kori bustard

Image

and again redback shrike , a lot of mosque swallow on the little bridge under Olifants river

Image

Image

a beautiful target (wather buck) and, of course, flowers

While I'm listeting to the radio... Chelsea-Manchester (1-1) :)

17.3 - 1

Only 2 days in the park, only one night
Hardly after one km I saw one well hidden lion

Image

I waited about 30 min. to have a better place, only one another car and me, and when the car go, a third come and "stole" the place, another boor  . I said what I think, half in bad English, half in French and left the camp… thwart. The last days, I'm not to take with tweezers (pas à prendre avec des pincettes). :x

I saw a waterbuk cleaning her legs and hoofs

Image

a fish eagle gliding in the air, just over me, some beautiful landscape, half shadow, half sunny … the beginning of sadness to leave…strange discomfort… :(
Then normal game, and 2 big elephants walking along the road, a monitor

Image

another dwarf mongooses, after waiting a long time

Image

a second chameleon wich was a little more fast than the first one

Image

a family of ground hornbill, with a ringed young

Image

(I noted in the book at Satara).
And, and one more menacing elephant

Image

buffalos, elephants with interesting tusks, a tiny laughing elephant

Image

and this very nice big kudu, very well horned

Image

à suivre ...

Oups... 3 pictures too many... is for the English goals...
still 1-1 8) (22h08)

Back "at home" I went to fix the last boring tyre (I will restore a good car) and washed it, more than 5300 km it was horrible, in good form, but dirty, dusty… and tomorrow, I promised, to myself  to take only tar road :rtfm: ...

Then, I was busy with my luggage. I sort out all I would like to let here, for the staff… "my treasury". I can't carry nothing more and need place for lighter "souvenirs"… I thought
A really sad evening

a little detour at Sable dam, by the gravel road (S51) . Not a good idea for the car, but for me an obligatory stop, and rewarded stop. I can't left Kruger only through the tar road :x

A last view of Olifants river

without fog from bungalow no 1 and a little bird who sang "goodbye"
