Whitewinged Widow
Euplectes albonotatus

Habits: Gregarious in small flocks, often in company with other Euplectes species (Widows and Bishops) even when breeding. Male displays from perch by singing with tail conspicuously fanned. Flight rather slow with rapidly fluttering wings, showing yellow and white flashes. Forages on groung and on standing plants.
Food: Seeds, grain, insects, nectar of aloes.

Saw a few this week, notably from the Lower Sabie tearoom area, looking at the reeds.

Could someone help with identifying this bird seen at Shimangwaneni dam in September. The first pic is heavily cropped from the second and this was the only one in a fairly large mixed flock.

I would say it's a Non-breeding Male White-winged Widowbird due to the yellow patch on the shoulder and the white bar in the wing.

Hi Pumbaa.
Where were these pictures taken? The bird in the second photograph is perched in a buffalo thorn (Ziziphus micronata) and could possibly be a female White-winged Widowbird? :hmz:

Hopefully someone else will have more clarity.

Thanks Roan - Both pictures have been taken in Kruger in February and I confirm with you the second one is a female white-winged widowbird as he was not far away. :tongue:
