Barbet, white-eared, Stactolaema leucotis

Resident, in South Africa only found in the coastal forrest belt of northern Natal as far south as Durban. Locally common, often in small flocks, sometimes roosting communually in nest holes. Diet consists of fruits and insects.

WE Barbets excavate holes in the underside of a dead branch. They are co-operative breeders and can have as many as six helpers. All may assist with the excavation of the nest, layering it with nesting material and even the incubation of the eggs!

White-eared Barbet: (Stactolaema leucotis)

Description:
Approx 17cm in length, and sexes are alike. It is dark brown to blackish all over, except for a white belly an da heavy streak behing the eye. it has a black bill.

Distribution:
From Durban northwards along coastal Natal to Mozambique. Also in Eastern Swaziland and Eastern Zimbabwe.

Feeding:
Fruit, of which consists almost entirely of figs. The young feed on insects, as well as fruit.
They feed together in groups of approximately 6-10, and sometimes foin mixed bird parties.

Breeding:
Breed September to December. They usually excavate their own nesting holes in dead tree trunks.
They lay 3-6 eggs, which are white in colour and are approximately 23 x 18mm in size.
