Boorgatspook - thank you so much for putting up these checklists.
I don't know if you have read my post in "Mapungubwe: animals" posted on 27th May 2009. I think the files at Leokwe need updating. Today's checklist confirms my thoughts on the animals found there. Thanks, too for the Marakele list. We were there a couple of weeks ago and were not handed (or offered for purchase) any real information at Reception - other than a very basic map. |

Great, that looks very accurate! I dunno who manages the list, but Tsessebe could still be added to the Mapungubwe list. I haven't seen them in ages, but there should still be one or two little herds in the Western Section.
I suppose donkeys and cattle don't count? ![]() |

Two more additions for the Mapungubwe list, both seen in August 2007:
Sable antelope (eastern section, posted photo in Mapungubwe mammals thread) African Wildcat (eastern section, sighted during sunset drive & western section on the river loop right next to the border fence) |

Johann wrote Sable antelope (eastern section, posted photo in Mapungubwe mammals thread) African Wildcat (eastern section, sighted during sunset drive & western section on the river loop right next to the border fence) How could I forget about our poor lonely sable bull! As far as I know it was spotted 2,5 months ago, so it should still be on four feet. I have also seen African Wild Cat on a few occasions, but purists might dismiss these records as there are a lot of feral/house cats around in the area and interbreeding is very common. Visibly so, in fact: at Rhodes Drift there used to be a snow white female cat, with a litter of 2 snow white and 2 African Wild Cat-patterned kittens. ![]() |

During our visit to Mapungubwe in December 2007 we regularly saw Backbacked Jackal near Maloutswa Hide.
And Banded Mongoose can be added to the Marakele list, as well as Spring Hare - saw both daily in Bontle Camp in February this year. And what about Klipspringer? Also saw and photographed Gemsbok there in 2007. And Warthog? |

Yeah, those are good additions from naomi c. Have also seen Mountain Reedbuck in Marakele NP and bet Common (Southern) Reedbuck, Porcupine, Civet and a bunch of mongooses and the two genets also occur. I have seen Aardvark too.

Thanks for the update, but I do not see giraffe, zebra or wildebeest on the Marakele list?

Not to be nitpicking but regarding the mapungbwe list: the scientific name for aardvark is not Proteles cristata, which is the name for aardwolf, but Orycteropus afer.
Which one is the one we should be looking for when we visit the park in february. Gr |

We've seen an aardwolf on a Mapungubwe night drive in October last year. According to the guide they are seen from time to time.
