I've gone through the whole butterfly index, but can't seem to find this one, which unfortunately refused to open its wings for me :( The closest I could find in the index is the common diadem (Hypolimnas misippus), but I don't think this is quite the same?

Hi. It is a layman / ouheks / Amauris albimaculata. They are quite common in most forests in the eastern parts of SA. The breed on creepers of the genus Cynanchum, which makes them poisonous, and are mimicked by the variable diadem, Hypolimnas anthedon form mima. The have one of the most amazing pupae of all butterflies. The photos shown are of a very similar species, the chief / toordoktor / Amauris echeria. Rumour has it humans were not the first to invent mirrors...
