Wonderful topic Ifubesi.

1) The smell of the camps (the thatch, the wood, the braai fires. the flowers).
2) Hyenas calling at night.
3) The colour of the bush during the golden hour before Sunset.
4) Zebra calls.
5) The millions of stars at night.

5.1) Limited mobile phone coverage
5.2) Elephants chewing branches.

 BB -

but even before the entrance gates - that big green sign board with the kudu head > KRUGER NATIONAL PARK > (for me) MALELANE GATE, is the most wonderful (first) sighting after two days on terrible roads

... AND what about the moment one book the next visit - priceless  .

1. Arriving at the entrance gate, what a wonderful feeling.

2 Hoping to spot something on your way to camp.

3. Making breakfast at the picnic spots.

4. Grandkids spotting small animals in camp particularly owls.

5. When the unpacking is done sitting on the stoep with a welcome cuppa.

18 Aug...... Bataleur.

21 August .. 26th Satara yeah!

Mine would have to be (no specific order)

1. Smell of the potatoe bush when you first open the window or on a game drive
2. The sound of fish eagle
3. Waking up at ungodly hours to get ready to leave for Crocodile bridge gate
4. The cold breeze/wind when you pick up a bit of speed after entering Kruger
5. That one sighting that will stay with you for ever and drives you to go back. No matter what animal sighting it is. it just has to be a once in a life time spot. crocodiles hunting the tiny fish in Sunset dam (two weeks ago) and to get up and close to a pied kingfisher/giant kingfisher, and to see the size of the bird, the condition of the bill, and actually how dirty they are :):)

Great Thread Ifubesi.

I think that if I had the chance I would fill all the pages on this website with all our family recollections.

However 5 it shall be.

1) Enrty at any gate and the feeling that the madding world is left faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar behind.

2) The smell of the potatoe bush.

3) Sighting a yellow ribbon and actually having a chat with the owner.

4) lying flat on my back with a Cappies n Coke gazing at the stars just before retiring for the night.

5) The look of wonderment on my sons face when ever we spot something extra ordinary. ( big or small fauna or flora its the same every time :D :D :D ).

Alright just one more for luck. The CRY of the FISH EAGLE

Oh i forgot, one of my other fav things about the bush is the sound of the Purple crested Turaco. although I still do not have a good enough picture of it to tick it off my list, it is none the less a very good sighting, as well as a beautiful call..I have it on my phone as a bbm sound :)

Ok, 8 things ....
The smell of the evening fire.
The scopsie krrrk'ing away
The Nightjar singing its song
The Emerald Spotted Wooddove on a hot summers day
The Franklins in the early morning
The scrunching of gravel beneath the tyres in the early morning
The whoops of a hyaena
Being woken by the roar of lions at 1 in the morning

I could go on and on....

1. The "Kruger smell" when driving over the Crocodile River at Malelane gate.
2. Peace, tranquillity, silence and "leaving everything else on your mind" outside the entrance gate.
3. The whoop of the hyena.
4. The smell of "pronutro" on a late afternoon drive (still not sure from which tree this aroma comes).
5. The anticipation as you drive around every bend and corner.

I will experience all this again next Wednesday

The one thing that captures the spirit of Kruger for me is when I meet someone in the park that is past the - seen the big 5 and already visited all the campsites rush. Talking to like minded souls that made peace with the fact that we will never grow old enough, nor ever have enough money to see everything Kruger has to offer in our one short lifetime.
