Have just returned from a trip to Satara and Mopani . Missed the Osprey at Sable dam unfortunately , but had 3 new Kruger species for me :
Redheaded finch on Letaba bridge
Fiscal Flycatcher on Manananga 4 x 4 trail
Greater flamingo at Matambeni hide

In addition , 2 purple heron at Pioneer dam , many yellow billed oxpeckers on the Mopani buffs and few in the Satara area , african hawk eagle and barred owl near Satara , and on the animal front , 71 lion , 1cheetah , roan , tsessebe and eland .

We also saw a Purple Heron at Pioneer dam 2 weeks ago. Saw it at Pioneer dam in February as well. So Pioneer seems to be a common hide out for it.

Have seen it at Lower Sabie bridge and Lake Panic before as well. So not an incredibly rare bird for Kruger really.

Well, I've never seen it in KNP, so I'm still  .

Maybe we don't go south often enough :hmz:

Okay, Pioneer dam is near Mopani if I remember correctly, but we usually just pass through there on the way to or from the Phalaborwa gate. 99% of our time is spent much further north

Hi all,

This is great info; my wife and I are in the park for just over two weeks from tomorrow; we are birding and mammaling and we will be up North for five days; look forward to talking to anybody with bins!

If anybody has up to date information on Pels would apprecaite it; we will be staying at Olifans so I understand that is a possibiliy; Arnots Chat; any recent sightings?

My thanks/ Mike and Rose

We recorded a young Black Sparrowhawk just outside Talamati during our visit to Kruger in June. Pics on our blog...
It's a very rare and first for Kruger sighting for me!

Very nice sighting, and some very good photos of it Lizet. I also managed to find a juvenile Black Sparrowhawk along the H10 last year.

So under what area will you classify the sighting then? Inside or outside Kruger? :hmz:

My Kruger list is just of species counted inside the old Kruger gates.
Do the new gates (like the one at Orpen) fall under the new Greater Kruger borders and does that then include places like the Umbabat area next to Kruger and Sabi Sands?

Well.. that is probably up to the birders discretion, but I would think that the new Orpen section should be included? Animals are roaming freely in the area, so I suppose bird ticks should count.

I exited the Phabeni gate, so it doesn't qualify as a Kruger tick.
