Unread postby Addo Elephant » Wed Jul 27, 2011 7:44 pm

Here are some pics of the snow this week in Mountain Zebra National Park, mostly on the Kranskop Loop and higher-lying areas of the Park:

Wow I've seen now photos of 2 parks with snow. Wonder if it snowed in Golden Gate. Van Reenen was closed so there must have been snowfalls although it can miss it even if there's snow in Mooi rivier.

Malelealea,

At sea level the possibility is very slim, but do recall of a few years back (maybe 10 -20) that it did snow on top of Table Mountain.

The closest point to Cape Town will be Franshoek (~90 km away) where I've seen and play in the snow near Wemmershoek peak. Another favourite spot for snow is Michelle's pass near Ceres.

The highest point in MZNP is about 300 m higher above sea level than Wemmerhoek peak.

Other spots close to sea level where you can find snow is Stutterheim and Hogsback near EastLonden and Mooirivier near Durban.

Road closures in Mountain Zebra National Park due to snow

Unread postby Badgerlover » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:31 pm

Why have all the roads been closed in Mountain Zebra National Park? The snow does not seem to come down that low.

Is the camp still accessible with the roads closed or is there no access to the park at all at the moment?

The restcamp has always been accessible as the snow did not come down that low this time.
The Kranskop Loop and 4x4 trails were closed due to snow and wert conditions once the snow started melting, but the Kranskop Loop was re-opened yesterday. The 4x4 trails have been opened today.

Thanks for the information.

We will be visiting the park for five days in two weeks time, which we are really looking forward to. Unless there is new snow I suppose conditions will have cleared by then.

Snowy Mountain Zebra

What a wonderful welcome to the Park for me - it snowed in Mountain Zebra National Park last weekend!

Here are some photos of the snow in the Park:

And our rangers had to check on some of the fences in the snow!

Snow has almost completely melted by now so the Wilgerboom River and waterfalls are flowing strongly. All the roads in the park are open again.
