Aired the idea of a Marakele sightings topic elsewhere and got one vote for and zero against, so here goes, lets see if it works.
Hoping to get people to post their sighting of uncommon animals and/or behavior with date and location, pictures or not. On the mammal side I was thinking reports of the Marakele Elephants, the rarely seen Lions (if still around), the newly introduced Cheetahs and of course Leopards. Also sightings of some of the not so common antelopes like Sable, Roan, Gemsbok etc. that should all be present at Marakele would be great. Besides that any of the smaller cats, others of the elusive mammals mainly active at night and anything else you would want to brag about. But fell free to post any sighting from your Marakele visits With Rhinos being seen on most game-drives at Marekeles non-big 5 part, and to avoid any controversy of keeping track of their whereabouts, an according forum policy, do not report exact locations, although I don't think a photo of them at the Bontle As for birds, I am sure all you birders know what is worth reporting to others and what’s not. To keep it relatively resent I put 2012 in the subject. If all goes well a 2013 topic will follow when time comes. Let the games begin |

Having stared the above and being a Marakele regular (5 short visits in the last year) I better start!
This Saturday 14/Jul/12 at 16:30 we were lucky to spot an Aardvark sniffing around next to the road on the Tshungula Drive between the entrances to the 4x4 track. Being the 3rd place I post this picture here I promise it is the last! ![]() Other of interest was what I believed was (actually quite sure at the time) Brown Hyena tracks off the northern part of the Tsessebe loop on Sunday (14/Jul/12) morning. The Marakele mammals checklist on here does not mention Brown Hyena though? It had clearly been dragging something. Guess if not Hyena only other possibility is Leopard? Lions were heard roaring during the night at the Campsite, but I guess that was from the nearby Predator Center rather than from within the park. All the best, Michael |

It seems like during winter your chances are good to spot an Aardvark in Marakele - we saw this one on the Tsessebe Loop over the June long weekend in 2011

Ok, so I will post a few pics from previous visits to keep the thread going.
We have only seen Marakele's elephants once - in 2007- from the lookout point above Tlopi Tented camp. ![]() |

On our first visit to Marakele, way back in 1997, we saw a large herd of Gemsbok in the Kwaggasvlakte section of the Park. Since then, despite numerous visits, we have only seen Gemsbok once, also in 2007 and only a few individuals. I would love to know if there are at all any Gemsbok left in Marakele?
