So HOW CLOSE do you want to get, when on an open game vehicle?

This mommy ( with 4 young cubs ) , came right by me , looking me straight in the eye
Phew ! , that calculating look , made me close the window pretty quick-smart and even today , I still get cold shivers down my spine just thinking about it ![]() ![]() |

Nice photos and interesting views. I shall give the open window photo shoot a go during my next visit to KNP in Sept.

We were at the Hyena den near Letaba (though in those days we didn't know there was a den there!!)
Mommy and babas were lying down relaxing by the side of the road, so we stopped not too near, in case we startled them. My window was down, and I was getting my camera ready for a few photos, when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement!!! Daddy Hyena was right by my open window, eyeing me up and down. Thanks goodness for electric windows!! I always check now in all directions, to see if the whole family (regardless of which animal they are) is present!! |

Crested Val wrote Thanks goodness for electric windows!! Eh... I prefer non-electric ones. That saves having to grab the carkey first, switch on contact, and finally being able to close the window. And by hand can be faster, with more force. |

This video clip, is part of a documentary made by the BBC several years back, they interviewed Dr Douw Grobler in regards to the maneating lions in Kruger.
Earlier this year my SO and I had a similar encounter with a male lion in the South of the Park, the lion also lowering himself swishing his tail and performing an ominous rumbling growl at us. Needless to say my window was definitely closed. We have had similar incidents with other lions as well. In our experience this seems to be happening more frequently now than in the past. I have little doubt that cats indeed know there is an animal (not sure if they always know it is a human) in the car; several times we've had lions and leopards looking directly into our eyes despite being well back from the window. It is not just a glance, but a stare that may become a challenge. Cats are highly intelligent and should never be underestimated.

If this lioness wasn't looking at me through the open window, then I don't know what she was looking at!!!

Wow! Some VERY close predators!
onewithnature wrote Lovely pics, Flying Sailor. Did you get nervous having the cats so close, especially the lioness staring at you, and did you feel at any stage of changing your mind and raising the window? I am sure he must have, unless he was in a state of shock! |

I sure was nervous! Really gets the heart pumping ... The windows were open enough to get the camera lens through and that was it! I must admit though (as some of the forum items have said) I don't think the position of the windows matters ... If a cat wants you, it's gonna go through a car window open or not!!!!
