I have a small question I got back from KTP a few days ago and while there noticed (especially on the midnight drive) that there were bat-eared foxes everywhere.I have not had a chance to look but does anyone know how large their territories are or if they are territorial at all? as there were adults within 100m of each other and too many to be from a single family unit. Also any idea on their social structure?

Just had a brief look. According to Estes, the bat-eared foxes are monogamous and non-territorial, seen in pairs or trio's.

Resident and transient pairs may cluster within a few meters from each other, sometimes in large numbers.
They change their territories yearly, seeking out good foraging areas.

If found in trio's the male and 2 females will share a den and the cubs are communally cared for.

Scent marking is not territorial but rather to establish pair bonds, the female urinates first then the male sniffs and covers her mark.

Does anyone have anything to add?

For some years in my life I did the graveyard shift.

Morning tea would begin at 21.30 pm, lunchtime at
24.00Pm/Am depending on workload. Afternoon tea
always turned into fiasco. Life to the working fraternity
would seem no different, before sunrise or even after
sunset. Heck we even went for a drink after a good
days work! Hah, at five in the morning. (thursdays,..
boys nite out).

The way home would resemble something similar to
a ski slope with all the bits and pieces. The way down
covered at least 5 major intersections in plain sight.

When man and mongrel go moggy at that time of the
month!! Some real scary sightings, not excluding me!


We definitely are affected by moonswings, I believe,
any comment??

I can usually tell when its getting close to a full moon, I get easily irritated, snappy and generally grumpy. This normally happens when my sleep patterns are distrupted. So perhaps it's not having a direct affect on my mood as such but on whether or not I sleep well during a full moon.

Dare I say it, I have noticed an increase in argumentative posts on the forum as well at the time of a full moon.

I got a question. It is something that I heard some people say, but i cannot quite decide if it's an "ou vrou storie" or if there is really some truth behind it.

When there are a crazy lots of ants in your house (not the odd row of ants against the kitchen wall that eat some crumbs- way more than that) it is a good sign of that one of 2 weather things, either a cyclone will hit the land or that it will snow it winter. This sounds a bit fishy to me. Anyone got some insights on this???

I have also noticed the increase in activity from the ants. Lots of heaps of earth on the lawn and patio made by these small little black ants in and around the house. It looks like are stocking up for the winter semi-hibernation. It sounds cruel, but I have discovered an ant killer which you strew around the heaps of earth. They carry it with the other food into the nests and then the ant killer slowly poisons them.

The same observation I've made, can it be true what WFG is saying? What will it be a cyclone or snow or both.

I've also noticed that when the ants start building up their nests, we're likely in for some rainy weather (I'd say 60/40 percent chance of getting a few mm's of rain). However, much more reliable are centipedes! Once the centipedes start walking around everywhere in broad daylight (including coming into the house), we're almost definitely in for a good bout of rain 30 mm + / one day or several days of rainy weather. Anyone else noticed this?
