Barcud, Dirk and jaybabe well done and thank you all so much for taking part in the challenge! I'm sorry it was rather tough, but hope that you all learnt as much about this weird creature as I did.
So now, the answers.... (and take note that I used 2 sources which could be wrong, or different from yours, so please do challenge them if you disagree All three of you got 5/6 so you are all it! First one of you to post is the lucky one I guess CONGRATULATIONS!! And I look forward to your questions!! BushFairy wrote 1) The aardvark is related to the pig family a. True b. Hi Tom, thanks for posting.
There as so many varying discussions on this, I suppose it then depends on the source you are using. I have read up on quite a few different sources, and this is what I have I have based my answers on: Q. 1) A - my source states they are no longer than 19 cm, usually about 16cm Q. 2) C - The territory of a steenbok is dependent on rainfall and availability of food, so they can vary. One of my sources states that in Kruger the average territory of a male is about 1 km which can be shared with 2 females. Q. 3) D Q. 4) D - not sure if the exact gestation period is known, however, it is said to be no longer than 192 days, so as you have asked for an estimation, I picked D. Q. 5) C |

Sorry, sorry, sorry! I completely let this one slip my mind - old age I'm afraid Anyway let's get this going again. Thanks for the answers Siobain - 2/5 I agree it depends very much on the source, as my book (Chris and Tilde Stuart's field guide) disagrees with some of the extra info you have given. So now that this is active again, I should let this one rest for a few days. I'll check back on SATURDAY. If I don't post...well... send a search party or something. |

1.b - The Rowland Ward Trophy length held by D. MacIntosh since 1909!
2.a - See discussion below. 3.d - They use middens, hence the same shallow hole to defaecate each time. 4.c - Again this varies according to conditions, but the two most reliable sources I have suggest 170 days (166-177 and 160-180). 5.b - The Congo is too wet for them; they prefer drier areas. Addendum: Question 2 is highly variable as territory depends on numbers of steenboks, distribution movements, rainfall patterns, and food availability. Therefore, territories can vary substantially, and I don't believe one can pin it down to within 0.01sq.km., which is far too static a number. However, I know that they are fairly densely congregated within their frequented areas of Kruger (in some areas, the Sharpe's Grysbok surplants them), so I've taken the most dense conglomeration you offer - 0.01 sq.km. |

I'll give it to you OWN - 4/5
According to my source the average KNP steenbok has a range of 0.03 square KM, but I agree in hindsight it was a slightly vague question. Well done - IT! |
