Want to share some of the fun things that are said or done while driving around looking for animals!

My mom and I were driving along and picked up a hitch hicker in the form and shape of a grasshopper. The stow away flew into the car through my open window (driver side) and made himself at home somewhere in the back of my little Fiat Panda! We had just seen a leopard

which left us feeling quite pleased. We then turned into transport dam for a cupper.
flask of hot water
Tea bags (now not us  )
Tupper filled with sugar
Mom had cups ready and opened later item....at that precise moment grasshopper decides to join in the fun and makes his way to the front of the car! :sup:
Well there was sugar everywhere! and we  about it for quite some time.... even after cleaning when we blasted on the aircon - tiny projectiles (sugar granuals) came flying out at us!
 It truly was hilarious!

Finding those flatties (lions) in the dry season.........

Usually when driving between the water spots and not seeing much, we stop, switch off the vehicle and just enjoy the complete silence. Somewhere between Nsemani dam and Maroela after sitting quietly watching the surroundings coming to life slowly with movement, we spotted three ground horn bills making their way towards and then across the tar road.

I took a few photos of them crossing the road, concentrating on camera settings, when my wife said - lions. Huh? Three females were having an afternoon snooze not 30 meters from where we were. The lions were not interested in any vehicles that stopped, they did not even move or flick a tail, but the horn bills got the lions to sit up and take notice. The lions where well hidden when lying down and most people thought we were watching the horn bills. As soon as the horn bills move away a bit, the lions would lie down again - when they moved a bit too close, the lions would respond by sitting up.

Let's just say we had some fun trying to identify the people that did spot the lions without me telling them.

The reason Mother dislikes (shall we say) squirls....we booked into Shingwetsi and when mom was ready for bed on our first night, she found one such furry creature under the bed spread! :sup: Dad & I manage after much laughter  and :hmz: to catch and set it free. But mom wanted dad to drive over every one we spotted after that

Wildone, lovely thread

I'm afraid with lots of young teenage/adult children there are often naughty comments about the five legged ellies found in the Park.  not suitable for under 18.

On BB's theme!

Me: There's an ellie in the road up ahead, subtle hint to slow down a bit
SO: Still plenty of room to go.
Me: No I think we should stop here! not so subtle
SO: He looks very relaxed, I think we can go a little closer.

On yesterdays day drive.

Cars stopped up ahead.

Wife: I wonder what they are looking at.

I start slowing down.

Wife: By the time we get there whatever it is will be gone.

A member of a camera club was traveling with me. This is the one sided conversation,

" A little bit forward"
" Ok, stop, switch of the engine" click click.........
" Start and go a little bit forward. No, reverse"
" Stop stop, switch off the engine" click click......
" Start and reverse to that tree"
" No no a bit forward. Stop stop, switch of the engine" click click.....
" Ok, start and turn the vehicle around"
" Reverse a bit. Ok ok stop, switch off the engine" click click....

The next morning I asked him to go out with his own vehicle.

First visit to KNP, with keen birders. Buckie stops, I raise binos and start searching bushes and trees. Voice from front seat - `Can`t you see the b****y thing?!`. Large bull ellie at side of road ( I was quite uptight about encountering ellies).

On another occasion, same trip, having been told of area where ellies had developed habit of breaking into camps because of their taste for oranges - again, large bull elephant close to road, same voice `anyone like a piece of orange?` (SIL liked winding me up, can you guess?)

On an evening drive we drove down towards a waterhole following a lion when he came across a very grumpy mom elephant!! the lion turned and ran towards the truck and a "little "voice from the back said  "OH S***"
(The lion turned off into the bushes, but I think somebody thought he was going to leap into the truck)
