Golden orb web spider taken in KNP. On both the pictures you can clearly see the male behind the female (between her back legs).

michel367 wrote I see she has food enough. I thought those were babies waiting to hatch, as then last babies ended up being males trying their luck. ![]() |

Seems a good time of year down here too. Appeared in the lemon tree about a week ago. Perfect spot for its camouflage.

Hi Sprocky
Most of the time you will find dew-drop spiders on these webs. Look around at the edges of the web, small spiders , silver elongated body (looks like a dew-drop, for camouflage), they scavenge on golden orb left-overs |

Hi Scipio
I agree, especially after some heavy dew. Once saw a woman suffering from arachnophobia jump off a moving landrover when they drove through a golden orb web. Was hilarious How was traffic in the park? |

Quick update from this morning before I head off on the spider in my lemon tree.....1Xwhite-eye which might not be the heaviest bird in the world but managed to get itself well and truly stuck in her web. I am afraid though that with 9 and 4 year old girls in the audience there was never ever in a million years (and then some) going to be the option of letting nature take her course and the cacophony of pleas ensured its freedom

Being one of the strongest natural fibres (& man made at that) in the world it is no surprise. I have seen various birds, Bats in Orweb Spiderwebs.

Hi everyone, just joined! I have an orbweb spider and her happy little beau resident in a LARGE web under the eaves of our house, just outside our lounge. She has been there for a few months now and I have read up on the net about them, finding out whether poisonous or not etc. We are not really nervous about them being there, and love to spook our guests with the sight of their huge web and the female's size, but I just want to make sure that there is no danger of her or any offspring maybe moving into the house?
I have a 6year old son and baby on the way in 3 months time, so just want to cover all bases for safety and scary sakes! Any advice? I will take some pics tomorrow and post here; the web is well over 1m in diameter and she regularly puts out new strands into places that we don't necessarily agree about, like the plastic garden chairs, the sliding door etc. which we then have to "remove". Hopefully this will not upset her equilibrium... I am in Centurion - are they common here? |
