I've also seen them. Yes this is a frog and they lay their eggs in the foam. When it starts raining, the foam starts melting and the little toads fall into the water. Or that's what I've heard...

That does make sense, but why place it in a spot where other creatures, animals and the likes can get to it ? :hmz:

I don't know. Maybe the foam has a foul taste and the other animals leave it alone? Maybe somebody else can shed some light on the matter?

Isn't this from the foamfrog?

The outer layer gets hard, creating a sort of pool above the pool. When the little ones are ready they pop out into the water, having no fears of the voracious insect predators (like dragonfly larvea) any more?

Foam nest tree frog. As DuQues says, the outside of the foam gets hard, protecting the eggs inside. The nest is not really all that accessible, since it hangs out over the water - usually also high enough to be safe from water-borne predators. Once the eggs hatch and the tadpoles are ready they drop out the bottom into the water where they are then relatively safe.

Could somebody please tell me the name of the frogs that build these nests? A friend of mine told me these are Foam Frogs, but I would also like to get the scientific name and I couldn't find it on google. Need the ID for my Trip Report, had a very exciting sighting with one of these frogs at the Gardenia Hide in KNP

They're Foam-nest Frogs (Chiromantis xerampelina).
A common species in the Lowveld and very easy to ID after dark... with just a tiny bit of imagination, their combined calls sound like "thirtyfive... thirthyfive... thirtyfive..."

I've got some really nice pics of them in their white daytime suits :-) If I find the time I'll dig them up and post. If the Forums allow, that is. If not, I can still send... In that case just PM me your email address.

Great photos everyone!

Took me a long time to find one of my most favourite frogs. Finally got one at the Shimuwini lapa area in February.
