OWN, I agree, I am having a difficult time with this one. The only thing that I can find that comes close is the Leaf Katydid, others have much longer or much shorter fore wings, or differently shaped heads. There aren't too many that are bright green like this one is, that is why I am drawn to the Leaf Katydid - Melidea brunneri.
I am no expert, but that would be my guess. |

Thanks for helping, OWN abd Norman. I also googled a bit (once OWN gave me a starting point) and it does appear to be similar to what we call katydids in the USA

Does anyone have an ID for this critter that landed on my car dashboard whilst driving in northern KNP on 17 April 2012?

arks,
It's not very easy to see, but perhaps a fruit or flower chafer (beetle)? There should be some pics on the web so you can see if it's even close. Good luck! |

Thanks, Africat! I googled and you were spot on — flower chafer, also called a scarab beetle

Glad to be able to steer you in the right direction arks. I never met an insect (or a piece of chocolate) that I could resist, so I'm drawn like a moth to a flame to this subject.
Hi OWN!!!! You've always been so warm and friendly to me, so I appreciate the kind words. HUGS! |

Africat, what about insects covered in chocolate? Is that a double treat?

That's not only a double treat, but could lead to a serious addiction. Would need rehab most likely.

Can anyone help with an ID for what this LBR has caught? Seen on the Old Main Road (S144) on 21 April 2012.

Arks, it is difficult to tell, but looks like it may be a Brown Locust (Locustana pardalina).

arks,
I really can't tell, but perhaps this is a bee. Meliponula is a genus of stingless bees, also known as mopane bees. I'm really stretching it here, so other replies may be more helpful. |
