After bantering around some ideas with some mods - and mainly because we felt that many people would love to get involved in many of the quizzes, but may feel intimidated by more experienced quizzers - we have decided to establish a quiz for those who are relatively new to quizzing. We felt that those without kudu horns were the most likely to fall within this category. This is a generalisation, but we needed to have some criteria to work with.
So, anyone who has no kudu horns (look below your alias and above your avatar to see if you have any horns coloured in) is fully welcome to participate in this quiz! The theme will be a general one on Nature, including all of the themes of all the other quizzes on this forum (birds, mammals, astronomy, trees, reptiles, insects, SANParks, etc. etc.). The general guidelines for this quiz are: - Only those with no kudu horns may ask questions and answer them; - The questions must be related to Nature and/or SANParks; - Try and keep the questions relatively easy so that new people are encouraged to participate; - The main aim of all quizzes is to learn from others, and share what you do know; - It is an OQ quiz, which means that no one is obliged to ask another question if they answer the previous correctly. An OQ therefore means that it is open for anyone to ask a question they desire, but please wait until the poser of the question confirms whether an answer is correct before asking the next one; - Please read the introductory notes for quizzes at the head of the category, and look at some other OQ quizzes on the forum to get an idea how they work; - HAVE FUN AND DON'T BE SHY TO PARTICIPATE: EVERYONE IS EQUAL ON THIS FORUM, AND NOBODY WILL SLATE YOU FOR TRYING TO ANSWER A QUESTION!! - If you're unsure of anything, ask one of the mods. |

This little critter is doing something that you would normally expect from a cat - what is he doing and why? ![]() |

Just to expand on Katja's answer a little, I think the Steenbok is marking his territory by scratching the ground where he has just defecated to associate the scent from his pedal gland with the dung pile.
I agree this quiz is an excellent idea for those of us not too familiar with the natural history of South Africa. ![]() |

Just wondering...for those of us who got a Kudu LONG before we discovered the quizzes, are we also excluded from this quiz? Seems to imply Kudus are won for quiz participation....not so as far as I can see. ???

I must agree with AFRICAT that not all of us got kudu horns for participation in the quizzes. Is it not a little unfair that we be excluded from this quiz?

I think OWNs' first paragraph states that the criteria was a generalisation and that the quiz was designed to attract "new quizzers" and this was a reasonable form of criteria ........ hence my

Hi all,
In response to Timepilot's question, I would say that the Steenbok is burying its droppings to hide its scent. Thanks, Pat |
