Hi all
There are so many animal quizzes and very few tree quizzes so I think it is time for a tree quizz. Rules: normal revolving quizz rules. Anyway here is the first question: What Acacia species is often confused with the African Weeping Wattle? |

Acacia Tortilis, Acacia Nilotica, Acacia Senegal ???
Indeed, when not in flower, the Peltophorum africanum can easily be confused with an acacia tree, except that it is completely without thorns. |

Hi All
Nope none of you are correct so I am going to give you guys a clue the name of species refers to the name of the botanist Joseph Burke who catalogued it. |

Hi all
Spot on Restio the Acacia burkei commonly known as the Black Monkey-thorn is easily mistaken with the African Weeping Wattle. Did you know that Weaping Wattle leaves can used as toilet paper if you are ever in the bush and do not have any (not that I have ever tried it). However it would be wise to first know the difference between them and the Black Monkey-thorn because using the wrong one could have very painful results!!! Anyway enough from me, over to you Restio. |

Thanks, NL for those interesting facts. I wouldn't have got it without your second clue.
This is a striking, shapely evergreen tree. Its large, compound leaves are a bluish green. The leaves grow in a cluster around the crown of a tree, in a similar fashion to those of a palm. |

@ naturelover
In university botany and during field guide training I was taught that it is the common hook thorn that can very easily be confused with the african wattle. This is because the common hook thorn has very small recurved thorns that are sometimes absent on some branches and the wattle has no thorns and very similar leaves. The monkey thorn has quite well developed recurved thorns so it would be less easily confused with the wattle but it is possible nevertheless. |
