I've only done the portion of this road south from H7 as far as the Talamati turnoff. What is the rest of it like for game viewing? Is the corrugation as bad as on the upper part of this road?

Seen herds of sable a couple of times on that route, plus a lion under the trees when temp was 44 deg C in Sept on yr. Also 3 Hyena at a carcass at Lugmag Dam - in general not a bad route except for roads being lousy in places.

We have never tried the S36 south from Muzandzeni to Tshokwane.
Any comments on game viewing?

Do you maybe mean the S36?

To quote you from the Salitjie road posting
Quote
We gave up on that road because we seldom saw anything at all and the damage to the car's suspension, even at 15kph, is really not worth it.

This road is even worse... in my books the worst road in KNP (regarding surface that is  ), VERY frustrating! Also not a lot of waterholes/rivers (Transport & Jones dam very nice spots) so most parts of this road is extremely dry and dense.
You can get lucky with this road (Johann & Oumie will testify to this) with the odd sable, cheetah & rhino, but we including a lot of other people have done this road without success on numerous occasions!
But you know what they say... the right moment at the right time

The S36? Well, we ended on that by accident one day from Skukuza to Tshokwane and about 15min after turning off that onto the S34 found a mother and young wild dogs. And yes, I have photographic proof - look in the public sightings gallery.

We had a close encounter with a group of lions hunting Sable, early in the morning. Sable escaped.

Sometimes can be pretty good , the dams are nice .
Have seen sable on it fairly often , as well as lions frequent the picnic spot area , other than that it can be long , bouncy , and with stretches with very little game .

We went on that road this year and although we didn't have any "major" sightings, sable etc. :( it was an interesting drive though and can save you quite a bit of mileage if you are pushed for time to get back to Skukuza or lower.

I agree about the rough condition of the road and we even found someone's number plate lying in the road.

Took that route a couple of times, not the best, but still takes it. Saw rhino, buffalo & lion on that road.

Ja :!:

Have always been lucky on this road regarding Sable sightings.
Also, like Bucky said, lion frequent the picnic site area. You can often hear the lions roar when at the picnic site early in the morning. They also like to travel right through the picnic site sometimes
The same thing seems to happen at Nhlanguleni, they come to the waterhole there for early morning drinks. If you are into birds, I've also found the Brown-headed Parrot on this road and at Nhlanguleni.

But like JB said, it is probably the worst road of all in the Park. Badly corrugated :!:

We drove the S36 last year from the H7 (Orpen/Satara road) down to S33, took the S33 to H1-3 and from there down to Tshokwane.

I can't remember the road being too bad. We saw lots of general game and also rhino, elephant including a very ill-tempered close to Muzandzeni (we have seen Sable here before) and found 6 lionesses lying next to the road ±100m after Nhlanguleni picnic spot.
