A capture on the webcam of a tawny eagle sunbathing
is a highlight to me.  Those of you who read my last TR know this already, but I'll include the explanation for why birds are doing this here again: Quote They do this for various reasons. Sometimes for body temperature regulation on cold mornings. They also have a preen gland which produces a waterproof coating for the feathers. Sunning converts this oil into vitamin D which keeps them in good health. This behaviour also aids in preening and keeping the feathers in good condition. It helps to dislodge parasites effectively. |
