I'm happy with the ID of steppe buzzard, but just for interest's sake, here is a bad pic of the bird flying off:

and an equally bad "almost-front view":

The "almost front view" might have been the first bird's mate. I can't quite remember...

The distinct white tail bar would suggest that it is an African Harrier Hawk. (Gymnogene).

As a species they seem to be adapting very well to living in suburbia. There are several pairs in Joburg, and quite a few in Durban and Maritzburg.

Adrian-exact locations please  . GPS cordinates will help too! Joking aside, would love to know where I can go huinting for a sighting of these. KNP occasionally gives a sighting.

I'm afraid they have a big range and tend to pop up all over the place, so I cannot give specific details. There was a breeding pair in the Wilds in JHB, so we used to see them all over the central suburbs from upper houghton, Norwood, Orchards, Oaklands, Orange Grove, and sometimes along the M1 through parktown North. There was also another pair in Fourways. Further from JHB, any trip to Kruger, or even Pilangsberg should yield one. Also if you are travelling from JHB to Durban in the Maritzburg, Pinetown area, I have seen them around.

Seen in the grasslands northeast of Lower Sabie in December 2010.

Buzzard of some kind?[/quote]

   Sorry didn't note the location :wall: . Matt is absolutely right, no JB's in Kruger, and the front view confirms it as SB.

Originally I'd thought that this was a pearlspotted owlet, but now, looking more closely at my photos, I'm thinking that it may rather be an African barred owlet? Seen in a tree overlooking my tent at Limpopo Forest tented canp, Mapungubwe, on 15 April, 2012.

Can someone help with the ID of this Juvenile Goshawk? Is it a pale chanting gowhawk or a Gabar goshawk?

We saw it on the S114 in Kruger in February this year - Indeed a beautiful raptor!

Thanks in advance :gflower:

My cousin saw a Gymnogene in Bedfordview on friday mornign, munching sparrow chicks (hose sparrows) from the nest. So I gues they can pop up anywhere!

There was a pic recently in the Cape Times of one flying through central Cape Town.
