Thinking of visiting the garden route next year, and using one or more of the Garden Route park camps as basis for visiting not only the parks, but also surrounding areas.

Can anyone suggest a good camp to this from as well as nice accommodation units to choose?

What are good activities in the Garden route parks? Also game driving like in the KNP?, bird watching?, hiking? Any recommendations?

Can one do "whale watching" from the units at Storms River mouth? Or must one go to Hermanus and go out on a boat?

Hi Dabchick

We spent a few nights in the Oceanetts at Storms River about two years ago, and had fantastic whale sightings as well as super otter sightings. The whales were right beyond the breakers and close to the viewing platform near the restaurant. A year ago we stayed in a honeymoon cottage at Storms River camp which was also lovely. For whales you must choose the right time of the year to visit.

I love the Storms River camp. From there you can do many activities - walks for eg, and drive to Natures Valley. Storms River is a good base to visit the area right up to Knysna.

This link should be useful to you too.

There are also lovely timber chalets at Ebb & Flow South in Wilderness, and rondavels in Ebb & Flow North.
