I find the Afrikaans very handy as I am getting used to all the English names. When it comes to the different mongooses for instance, I get completely lost with the Afrikaans names, which I am suppose to know!

Thaks BGS, this is very helpfull and as HoepHoep is saying, the afrikaans names helps a lot.

I made the mistake to call a Yellow Mongoose (Witkwasmuishond) a Whitetailed mongoose in a tripreport, which is two different animals.

Question: Why do I find NO record (am I blind?) of Cape Buffalo in Karoo National Park?
I camped there in April, and was told they had about 12 Cape Buffalo that wandered into the park from a nearby game ranch, and after negotiations they were left to stay in the park.
Are they still there?

Brown Hyena Parahyaena brunnea Bruin Hyena Night

(is it also known as a strandjut ?)....and where in thge Park is this resident...is it Darlington or Zuurburg section? Im not too sure if its alternate name "strandjut" would imply the coastal section, much like in South West Africa along the Namibian coast. ?

Brown hyena is listed because signs have of this animal have been recorded in Woody Cape section (which includes a coastal part). They have not been seen there very often so we are not sure how many occur there.

There have also been recordings of brown hyena in the Nyathi area of the Park.

does anyone know how popular bat eared foxes are in the park? Are there many of them?
We spotted a dead one laying on the ground near carols rest 13/8/2011, about 100m left of the waterhole. Hope this was a battle death and not some disease in the park spread by the dogs bordering the park. Sad loss. Another one bites the dust.

We do not have any official numbers of bat-eared foxes as they are rather difficult to count but the guides on the game drives say they see bat-eared foxes almost every second night drive that they do so I would say they are not rare.

Koala bears are found in Australia not in Africa. But yes they are very cute

Ive been away for a while, and only just managed to get back online, miss you all!!!!

Just wanted to know if there have been any definitive sightings of the brown hyaena ?

I have aphoto of a rare sightings of a dassie in the main section of the park...I say this because ive been there about 70 times now, and seen it once lol.


any further reportings of leopard in the main section too ?
