Wow! Roy has become a beautiful animal!
Photographed him about 2 years ago when he and Megan were on their own. Now he is stunning!

God bless,

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how many lions there are left in Main game viewing area of Addo Elephant National Park atm? I heard talk this weekend that only 10 left in the park, some shifted to Karoo National Park and some sent to other pvt conservation area's near addo.

Will Addo not be able to house 24+ lions now that its doubled in size? or is the plan to have only 10 from now on? I heard that the plan is to keep the number down to 10. Can anyone verify? Megan?

Also whats happening with the Lions sent to Karoo? I heard they killed to many buffalo and now they need to be relocated out of karoo. Fact or fiction? can someone verify?

Thanx

There are 10 lions in the main game area/Colchester area.
Three lions are in the boma in Nyathi area currently, awaiting release.
There are two lions in the Kuzuko Contractual area.
The four lions and four cubs that were translocated to Karoo NP are doing well there. They haven't killed any buffalo because there are no buffalo in Karoo.
We will continue to manage the lion population conservatively so that they do not have an adverse impact on the prey populations and therefore biodiversity as a whole.

Thx for the info, Megan. 10 lions in the main game area? I feel priviledged to have seen 4 of them together last may.

:D Hi Megan

Thanks for the update on the lions. I have somehow lost track of what happened to whom... so am trying to get a picture of the current situation in Addo...

Gina +2 cubs +1 cub of Kamqua (these 3 cubs used to be together -- are these cubs now on their own, about 3 years old, 2 males and 1 female?) -- often seen around Marion Baree?
Aardlam + 2 or 3 cubs about 15 months old? -- often seen in Matyholweni area?
Roy -- 5 years old?
Nomad -- about 10 years old?

You mentioned that there are no buffalo in Karoo NP. Please correct me, but last year a Sanparks official at KNP told me they had seen about a dozen buffalo in the valley on a night drive that had somehow escaped from a neighbouring game park. Have they returned/been returned?

Thanks and God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Thank you for the detailed breakdown Megan. Glad to hear the lions are breeding enough to allow for trans-location.

I'm confuse but got it a bit different :? :?

Gina and 2 young ones(+- 1 and halve years) both males. Often seen in Matyholweni area
Aardlam and three young adults (2 male and 1 female) they are almost 3 years old and might have left her. Often seen near Marion Baree
Roy - 5 years old
Nomad- older male

But this brings me to 9 and not 10

I thought threre were two more adults. A previous litter of Gina-1male and 1 female-almost 4 years?

Please help, Megan

Hi Henk

Now I am more confused!
Lets hope Megan gives us the right answer! I do know that in Dec 2008/Jan 2009 Gina and Kamqua were together with 3 cubs around Marion Baree area (I thought the older male belonged to Kamqua and the younger male and female belonged to Gina) -- that is why I presumed that these 3 young adults would rather be with Gina than Aardlam, but who knows...
Glad to see they have grown up to be so beautiful!
As for the missing extra lion -- could it perhaps be one of the other older males that were brought back from Kuzuko when Bitterbal, Nossob and Kamqua and Megan were taken to Kuzuko in 2009?
Thanks for sharing, and God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Friedrich and Henk, apologies, my maths (non)skills left me in the lurch...there are indeed only 9 lions currently in Addo main game area/Colchester:

- Gina (5yrs) plus her two young male juveniles (1.5 yrs old) often seen down in Colchester

- Three Subadults (2 from Gina, 1 from Kamqua) seen around Main Camp from Carols Rest across through Gorah to Marion Baree, although recently they are spending more time in Colchester
The subadults are two males - Norman and Zwaai - and a female - Josie - all about 3 yrs old.

- Aardlam (8 yrs) by herself generally in Main Camp

- Two adult males - Roy (4 yrs) and Nomad (5 yrs) - seen in Colchester mainly

Hope that makes things clearer.

Thank You Megan.

Great to add names to the young ones. One is not maybe named after a very good guide in Addo?(Zwaai).

Seems like the southern area is more and more the place to look for lion.
