Bontebok National Park is proud to announce that we have a new Cape Mountain Zebra foal in the park. He is still a little camara shy, but be sure to be on the look-out for it when you visit the park.

Intresting facts about the Cape Mountain Zebra:
In 1950, the estimated total number of Cape mountain zebra dropped as low as 91. It is considered the largest mammal in South Africa to have come so close to extinction. The world population now stands at around 2500 animals, but is still threatened. A lack of genetic diversity in the population remains a problem. Severe inbreeding can amplify diseases such as Sarcoids, a virus previously found in Bontebok’s population.

That is wonderful Marloise

A success story though they still have to be carefully monitored.

Are there any mountain zebras anywhere else in the world and are they from the same gene pool?

According to our latest number on the Cape Mountain Zebra population within SANParks are as follows:

Bontebok Park - 9
Table Mountain - 3
Tankwa - 35
Camdeboo - 154
Mountain Zebra NP - 672.

A lot of the Cape Mountain Zebra are on private game reserves and Game lodges.

This sounds good, but I think some stats are missing -- surely there are a lot of mountain zebra in Karoo National Park too?

There are also the Capenature provincial reserves like Baviaanskloof and Gamka mountain reserve that still have original, wild roaming mountain zebra that should have new genetic variety for our Sanparks zebras...?

Surprising that such rare animals should have the `luxury' of being predated on by lions in Karoo and cheetah in Mountain Zebra, although I suppose they are perhaps too agile for the lions?

Thanks for the good news!
