we are planning to visit KTP in June. now we are quite unsure about the evening and night temperatures especially if we want to stay in the Wilderness camps. Has anyone any experience how really freezing it is? The wilderness accomodation are made of tent so how is it with cooking and staying in the camps in the envenings and nights? or would it be better to prefer the main camps? we know the temperatures in Kruger during this time of the year and there ist was not so bad with layers of cothing.
Thanks a lot for your advice.

Hi, see this topic with some info on the winter temperatures

I would make it a mix, main camps and wilderness if you have enough days.
Grootkolk and Urikarus are famous for their minus temps, so is the window ice scratching of your car in 2R or the cold wind in KK. Make sure your fire is on before dark, layer up and enjoy the cold.
On the other hand it can be very pleasant too

Hi worldtraveller.

We went to KTP in late June two years ago and only stayed in the Wilderness Camps. We were prepared for the worst - hot water bottles, extra blankets, gas heater etc.

The coldest morning temperature was -5 deg C. Most other mornings were below 0 deg C. The daytime temperatures were very pleasant. We managed to braai every night - warm jackets and beanies!!

We actually didn't use most of our extra equipment - I think we did put extra blankets on the beds. The gas didn't freeze, the water didn't freeze - we were warned both might happen. The bakkie didn't freeze.

Just go prepared and you will be OK.

thanks a lot for your advice. We are oversea tourists so we would not be able to take any heater or blankets with us. the only Equipment we could bring from home are warm sleeping bags, warm cothings, cloves and beanies, scarfs and perhaps warm water bottles. A mixture of wilderness and main camp might be the sensible, as we suppose that the temperature Problem is in the main camps not so serious due to the built accomodation.
What else on Equipment would you recommend?
