I will be in the KTP in ten days time and would like to know what the status of the road is when travelling to the KTP via Van Zyls Rus as I last did it via this route eighteen months ago. The tar road after Hotazhel up to Van Zyls Rus as well as the gravel road after Van Zyls Rus.

A friend recently drove via van Zyls rus, in his Mercedes GL500, had 2 punctures within a few km's. Rocks went through the soft side-walls of the tyres. If you have a vehicle with low profile tyres with soft side-walls, it's better to avoid driving that route.

We traveled this road three years ago and it was worse than any road in the park!

We lost the spotlights on the vehicle and the bullbar was hanging on by one single bolt when we got to TR. Even the 2l Coke bottles vibrated to the point where they actually burst open.

Fortunately our little homebuilt trailer was only supposed to get to TR because we made arrangements for it to stay there during our visit. She parted with both shocks and one wheel was badly damaged. The technical guys and Jannie helped us do emergency repairs to the car before we left TR the next morning and also helped us get the trailer into some sort of condition to get it home.

Never, ever travel this road unless you are 100% certain of its condition! Unless you can drive it just after its been graded, you will be taking a chance which will cost you.

My advise is that if you are considering going via van Zyls, phone the police station at van Zyls from Kuruman and ask about its condition. Make your decision from there because they patrol this road all day long. Its condition can deteriorate within hours.

Lovely scenery, nice shortcut but it will never see us again.

Many thanks for your feedback and concers. I spoke to someone on the 4x4 website and he travelled the road two weeks ago and stated it to be fine. Will however take your advice and phone the police station at Van Zyls Rus.

Please keep us updated (even from TR if you can) on the condition. I will be short on your tail and would really appreciate comments

I am also very keen to know. With some rain there hopefully the roads can be graded? I have 33 days to wait but am planning my overnight accommodation based on being able to take this adventurous route.

Tobieo, you are so lucky, finishing up loose ends for this week and then you are off. Have an amazing time!

Thanks Tobieo. Will appreciate that!

Have readied the list of accommodation options at my designation stop, pending being worthwhile pushing to take the VZR road the next morning.

BTW, please pm me of any nice stops you find along the road for breakfast/tea. Enjoy supporting a local community.

John

I have just returned from KTP and travelled via Van Zylsrust on both ways. Road in fairly good condition and the grader was working the road on my return. It has a short stretch just outside Van Zylsrust that is a bit rough with some uneven patches. If I had to travel to KTP today I would use this route again (Sedan with low profile tyres is an obvious no go)

The worse is the stop and goes, 2 bad ones between Kuruman and Hotazel and probably 5 more on the way to Kuruman, the latter not too long wait but if you catch them all it does cause some delay.
