I have read the trip reports/FAQ and some more information on the forum. But i am still not sure if the direct road from TR to Nossob is open now. The latest news on the forum is that it will be finished very soon...but has anybody on the forum some "fresh"news about this road ???....... Also the road from Nossob to Bitterpan is that possible with a Nissan X-trail ?? I hope somebody can help me. Edwin |

Edwin if you read my posting on Page 2 you will see that the road is still closed and the date by which the construction will be completed is unknown.
You will categorically need a 4 x 4 to travel to Bitterpan and I do know that some of the X trails are 4 x 4's so you will need to ascertain whether in fact the one allocated to you is! Cheers and enjoy! We leave in 12 days time for KTP! |

I'm leaving tomorrow morning @ 02h00 for KTP! With an X-trail as well - although mine is 4x4. Technically not low range but my high range combined with limited slip diff has allowed me to conquer many paths that nobody said I would - and it has proved very capable in sand (Mozambique) so I believe if you have the 4WD Xtrail you should be able to tackle all the roads in the SA side of KTP.

Thanks Morkel, Penny and Caracal for the information.
Ok, then we have to take the dune road from TR to Nossob, but it's also a nice road, we drove it last year in september. I will ask at the rent a car office in Upington airport if the X-trail is a 4WD? I guess there are more people who hire an X-trail for the KNP By the way on my bookingpapers is mentioned ALL TERRAIN, so it should be ok....i hope so. One week and two days and then we are in KNP....JIPPIE! Edwin from the netherlands |

I notice on my map that there is a road from the KTNP across the border into Namibia at Unions End. Is this road open to the public or does one have to exit at the Mata Mata border post? I am looking for the quickest route from the KTNP to Maun which I guess is probably via Gobabis and Ghanzi.

It is still closed but you can travel on the Mata Mata road and then take the dune road to Nossob.

The Bitterpan road is for Bitterpan residents with 4x4s only. From the Kgalagadi website:
Quote The road from Samevloeing to Rooiputs towards the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will be closed for tourist traffic from January 2009 until August 2009 due to construction. Tourists can, however, commute via the lower dune road to Nossob. Only patrons of Rooiputs will be granted access with delays. The lower dune road is a normal two way road. They seem to be a bit behind schedule. |

A thanks. Noted. Lower dune road.
We refer to the 4x4 road as the dune road. No problem, the more dune roads the better. |

Hi. Can anyone tell us if the road works between T/R and Rooiputs are now complete. On another subject - are we allowed to tow our Jurgens Explorer (off road caravan) through from the SA side to Mabuasehube camp sites as it says in the latest brochure that no trailers are allowed on the Mabuasehube trail? Sorry, am a bit confused here!
